Review
"Graham Cairns's book is an innovative and welcome addition to the dialogue between cinema and architecture. Recently established as a field of research, this interdisciplinary terrain is relevant to other disciplines beyond architecture and film. Its influence is already evident in established fields such as history, geography, and cultural and language studies, but it is also gaining ground in other areas. This book is an opportunity to explore the alternative and complementary intelligence this field opens up, and which can be injected at various stages of creative design processes."

Architecture of the screen

This book sets out to upturn some conventions about how architecture appropriates film. It states that it turns a scenography approach into a cinematographic one. It does. I found it revealing in its general theme and in its details. The different (and very different) sections, are each full of fascinating details and unexpected connections between film, architecture, philosophy, art etc. Sometimes, it goes too far and the author let's his range of knowledge get in the way of a clear argument. But the range of subjects linked into the overall theme is impressive. It's very well and clearly written despite using some obscure references - and the footnotes are useful in explaining some theoretic concepts and technical issues. It's equally about film and architecture and doesn't seem to favour one or the other. Well worth the time (and sometimes difficulty) in reading.
