Great Wood-fired How-to!

I recently watched an episode of Man, Food, Fire on the Cooking Channel titled "Outrageous Ovens". The first half featured a barrel oven in Oregon. I was fascinated by the oven which appeared to be highly fuel-efficient and seemingly inexpensive to build. I immediately began searching for information on barrel ovens and found this book.

It is a great little book; clearly written, nicely organized, and well illustrated with a wealth of information and resources. I like the fact that it takes in to account the varying selection of materials and approaches, depending on budget, climate and locale. The book presents the techniques in a manner that is not at all intimidating to someone like me who has little knowledge of masonry techniques. The book makes the prospect of building a barrel oven both technically and financially doable.

The other very appealing aspect of this book is the modesty of the authors. This book doesn't purport to be the definitive tome on barrel ovens. It presents barrel oven construction as a fairly recent and evolving subject and actively solicits participation and feedback by any and all.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has ever considered building any kind of wood-fired oven. Even if you are considering something grander such as a domed or vaulted wood-fired oven, this would be a great starter and/or companion project.

I will try to update my review when I finish building my own barrel oven!

Careful when buying this book!

Careful when buying this book. It does a pretty nice job explaining the masonry part of the job but tells little about the metal parts (and there are lots of special metal parts). Be aware that the authors expect you to buy the metal kit from their store. Towards the end of the book there is mention of a future second book covering the metal pieces but over a year down the road I've not seen it and I follow their website looking for more information. There are also quite a few recipes in this book which was disappointing filler.

food and fire - a book for people interested in delicious self-sufficiency

I'm very excited about this book. I read it in one night- from the intros to the recipes in the back.
I'm a natural builder, who's enjoying the way that cob earthen ovens are becoming so much more well known. However, there are two main drawbacks to the more common earthen oven system (where the cook builds a fire in the oven cavity and then removes the coals)...It takes hours for the heat of the oven to accumulate, and it's difficult to cook larger items, because sometimes the door size can be limiting (and if someone makes a bigger oven to accommodate a bigger dish of food, than it will take even longer to heat up.)
Eva and Max have built and studied many such ovens. And so I think it's even more interesting that they're so taken with the barrel oven system. It seems like a great alternative. They heat up in 2o minutes, and can cook a wide range of foods, and Eva and Max have shown through their own work that barrel ovens can be beautiful.
I appreciate the simplicity of the book, the careful diagrams, the open discourse with the reader asking for feedback and engagement to improve this system, the examples of barrel ovens that they and others have built, and the obvious love which they bring to craft, food, and fire.
For the people that consider the metal work of the project daunting, they offer resources, and kits.
I also like how their book brings me closer to the earthen building tradition in Argentina (which is where their journey with the oven started). People have already been exploring the resourcefulness of barrel ovens there for some time.
I'm looking forward to building my own, hopefully this summer.

Some, who was born about 1956 in Upper Volta, was close to his shaman grandfather. But this relationship and his tribal way of life was destroyed when, at age four, he was kidnapped by a French Jesuit missionary and raised in a seminary, from which he escaped at age 20. Returning home to his Dagara village, he was viewed by some as too tainted by white knowledge and ways to be able to join fully in tribal life; nevertheless, he underwent an intensive and dangerous six-week shamanic initiation that thoroughly established him as a member of the tribe. Later, he was dismayed to learn his destiny as revealed in divination and decreed by tribal elders: to return to the white world as a bridge to save his tribe from complete inculturation. This fascinating autobiography illustrates the profound culture clashes between Western civilization and indigenous cultures. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.

Kidnapped as a young child from his tribal village in West Africa, Some was trained ("brainwashed") for 15 years in a strict French Catholic mission school and Jesuit seminary, until he rebelled, ran away, and made his way back through the jungle to his original home. There he underwent the traditional month-long Dagara initiation rite; but he never lost his Western education. Finally, the elders of his people sent him back to the white world to act as mediator and help the tribe survive. He won a scholarship to the Sorbonne, and now teaches in the U. S. About half the memoir is a protracted account of the initiation ritual, a story of a mystical underworld journey and rebirth that has been enthusiastically received at men's conferences in this country. It includes some self-help talk about our "dysfunctional relationship with the ancestors." What's most compelling here is the insider's account of white religious colonialism in Africa, as well as the sense of what it's like to be a man of two cultures with contradictory versions of reality. Riveting autobiographic tale; beautiful and ghastly visions

Things Malidoma experienced as a young boy around the time of his grandfather's death and subsequent funeral make Carlos Caste�eda's and Lynn Andrews' 'accounts' seem rather sanitized, maybe even contrived (especially evident in the case of Andrews). Plus the man is far more of a poet, a seer and a deep philosophical thinker than these others. You'll not find a better writer on matters mystical and religious probably anywhere, at least not in the 'confessional/autobiographical' literature.
Then again, herein are so many quotable passages that you could meditate on to form the beginnings of a new personal philosophy, it's really quite stunning. And it all seems like it equally extends from your own body and heart. This is in contradistinction, say, to a well-written but rather dry and compartmentalized account such as J. S. Danquah's 'The Akan Doctrine of God'*, which is more meant for those who enjoy the scholarly treatise, but might never wish to imagine themselves venturing into village life.
Malidoma was kidnapped by the local priest a couple of days after his father was installed as clan leader, soon after his grandfather's death. He was only 4 years old. He does not pull any punches in detailing the horrible physical and emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of these churchly personages, who made him and other young kidnapees and orphans total slaves to their colonialist/catechumenical education system. After over 16 years of this, the young man escaped and managed to walk back to his village over a hundred miles away. The remainder of the book is a very detailed and intense re-telling of selected experiences he was party to during his subsequent clan initiation. This constitutes the last 100 pages or so of the book. I can't begin to express how astonishing are the experiences, the images, emotions etc. represented on these pages.
Suffice to say that the man is an absolute wizard at using the English language. Carlos Caste�eda and especially Lynn Andrews seem like comic book literacy after you've dipped even a little bit into Malidoma.
I met Mr. Som� briefly at a Sun Bear Medicine Wheel Gathering a number of years ago; his personality is every bit as engaging as is his writing. His was a kind of quiet charisma, extending from which is an amazing, almost madcap sense of humor. You feel that his energy is entirely sincere, and that there's far more there than meets the eye. You can feel it, and yes, 'almost' begin to see into it, and with it.
If Nick Black Elk had written his own book rather than having his texts filtered through John C. Neidhardt, it likely would have approached the book-length intensity we find here. Then again I read 'Black Elk Speaks' over 30 years ago; Neidhardt's account might seem much greater at this point of my own life journey.

In the recent years there has been a surge of interest in indigenous tribal life and practices, as Western peoples start to feel the stirrings of their own indigenous tribal souls and go looking for answers to those who still possess the connection with the Land and the Spirit. While a lot has been published about Native American (both North and South), Tibetan, Altaic, Celtic etc. tribal life, rather little is known about Africa. Malidoma Some's book therefore provides a welcome and highly inspiring contribution.
With this book Malidoma ('Be Friends With the Enemy') creates a bridge into a world where a person's life is linked inextricably to the breathing of his village and where his destiny interlocks with that of his ancestors, his children and the rhythms of nature. It is a world imbued with meaning; the Dagara share it with tree and animal spirits, with supernatural entities (the kontomble, the "star people") and with ancestors who provide guidance and support. Malidoma also addresses topics of universal importance to all of us. What is a complete human being? Why does one need to be "initiated" into living in order to be "real"? How do we awaken and use all the resources stored in the "inner museum of our being"; what is the role of mystery and awe in the unfolding of our destinies and how does one learn to become available to them?
The book is written along the lines of ancient storytelling, and in a flowing delicate prose which radiates human warmth and respect for life. MS does a great job in depicting the Dagara as a spiritually aware people still attuned to their roots and their land. I understand that now, after his father's death, Malidoma has returned to Africa (temporarily abandoning his privileged and lucrative position within the Western "shamanic circuit") to assume his duties as a leader of his clan and as a mediator between the worlds that his people still remember and give homage to. He is a savy man who demonstrated to us all that befriending the enemy brings gifts to all involved in the process as it combines and integrates different yet complementary pools of knowledge. Myself I listen with deep appreciation and respect as the Dagara sing:
I want to be what I know I am,
And take the road we always
Forget to take.
Because I heard the smell
Of the things forgotten
And my belly was touched.

Astounding Parallels With the Afro-American Journey

Malidoma's life alone was a mini-representation of our entire experience as Afro-americans. He was kidnapped as a child from his Dagaran village and raised in a Christian missionary school. His own father was somewhat responsible for his kidnapping, because against the will of the elders, his father became friends with a Christian pastor and allowed him into the village (sound familiar?). One day, the pastor came and grabbed Malidoma without a word and took him to the missionary school (he was stolen, but he had access to the village...who's to blame? Sounds like the current debate :). Malidoma was subjected to all types of abuse as he was force to think as a European. There were European AND African teachers taking part in the brain-washing (sound familiar?). He was put into quarters with African boys from all over...many didn't even speak his native tongue (sound familiar?). As he and his new friends became older...they started to become more aware of their situation and the oppression. They remembered the pain and suffereing of the past and became rebellious. Although they had a small union, most of the other boys were too afraid to fight and some were even convinced that the Euro-education they received although through force, was a blessing that placed them above their "inferior" past (!). One day Malidoma struck out against a preist during class and ran away from the mission. He managed to walk nearly 300 miles back to his village that he wasn't even sure existed anymore. I was a long and HARD journey (!) and he finally arrived...only to realize just how "white" he had become (!). He was no longer a Dagaran...BUT fortunately his elders decided to give him a chance. He was allowed to risk his life in Dagaran initiation (VERY interesting part of the book) and he survived, reborn as a Dagaran. He still retained the European part engrained in him...he couldn't help this, but his wise elders saw usefulness in this. They ordered him to live outside of the village in the white world and to serve as a bridge of knowledge between the two worlds. Malidoma currently holds a Ph.D. and lives here in America. He holds many seminars and his life mission is to "fight" the battle between the Old and New world by teaching New-worlders the importance of ancestors and rituals. Malidoma literally means "To befriend the enemy".
This book is a must-read. Although I have written a summary here...it does not even scratch the surface. I just touched upon the most memorable parallels..there are many more.

It Takes Two: Strategic Intelligence and National Security Policy

In the U.S., the relationship between strategic intelligence and the formulation of national security policies has been to say the least complex and often confusing. This book provides what has long been needed, an objective and scholarly review of this relationship.

Rovner provides an excellent theoretical background to guide his examination of specific case histories that he has chosen to illustrate the relationships between strategic intelligence and policy. Ideally intelligence analysts should be able to operate without interference to produce strategic intelligence reports that are honest, objective, and supported by the best information available. Again ideally policy makers should be free to challenge such reports. Finally both analysts and policymakers should be able to hold rational discussions over differences in interpretation and conclusions in which the supporting evidence is considered objectively. Unfortunately this ideal is often thwarted by what Rovner calls "the pathologies of intelligence-policy relations." He has identified three such `pathologies': 1) neglect-policy makers ignore intelligence that does not fit their assumptions; 2) politicalization-the most egregious of the pathologies and one that has several different forms; and 3) excessive harmonization - intelligence analysts and policymakers are in such close agreement that they fail to critically scrutinize their conclusions. In the course of his discussion, Rovner also makes an interesting observation about secrecy. Secrecy he notes can be used by intelligence agencies as a source of power and as a means to support dubious analysis. Policymakers can use secrecy to support dubious policy decisions by implying that there classified evidence supporting their conclusions.

In any event Rovner provides case studies from the Vietnam War, the ongoing controversy of Soviet Military capability and intentions, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. These case studies accurately illustrate the pathologies hampering of productive intelligence-policymaker relations. Rovner does not assign blame but explains how this relationship got off track.

Originally, U.S. Strategic intelligence was largely produced by the Office of National Estimates (ONE) of CIA from 1947 through 1972. ONE was an in house CIA operation whose main analytic arm was the powerful Board of National Estimates (BNE) under the legendary Sherman Kent. BNE actually produced very good strategic intelligence which was often ignored by policymakers. For example as the U.S. moved toward ever greater commitments in South Vietnam based on the so-called "domino theory", it BNE that produced two estimates pointing out that this theory was hopelessly flawed. They were ignored, but were nonetheless presented good intelligence. President Nixon decided that ONE was too independent and ordered it disbanded and replaced with the more politically pliable National Intelligence Council (NIC) and a system of National Intelligence Officers who could be political appointees. This began the long process of decline of the U.S. ability to produce accurate strategic intelligence.

A Treasure Hunting Classic !

After the runaway success of his Treasure Hunter's Manual #6, "The Old Man" (although he wasn't quite so old in the mid-1960's!), sat down and wrote what amounted to a completely different book - THM #7.

Without a doubt this is the most complete handbook to successful treasure finding ever written. Well over 90% of what it covers is just as applicable today as it was written over four decades ago - and that is quite an achievement.

Please see the scan for the famous "LUE Treasure Map." Almost anything you read about this "natural Fort Knox" (which could be read at least two different ways) came from this book (there are some scattered mentions in Treasure of the Valley of Secrets by "Deek Gladson").

Any copy of this map - on the Internet or otherwise - is reprinted from this book and probably without the permission of the copyright holder.

"Karl von Mueller" (Charles Dean Miller) begins at the beginning: "What is Treasure?" Other Chapters comprehensively explain, in detail, "When," "Why," "Who," "Where," and "How."

Karl was the first treasure hunting author to offer accurate advice on "The Law" and "The Tax Problem." Of course, he was the first th'ing (he coined that, by the way) author to discuss a lot of things!

You can't read Chapter IX "Publicity and Secrecy" too many times. In successful treasure hunting - and in life - it pays to shut up and fly low.

There is, of course, much more - "Treasure Leads and Research," "History," "Legends and Myths," "Disposition of Treasure" - if will do you more good if you convert it to cash after you find it, on and on.

As a kid Chapter XIX "Buried vs. Sunken Treasure" was eye-opening. I'd read countless stories of huge, unfound lost treasure ships. The fact is these are out of reach of almost everyone. And, as those who salvage the SS John Berry discovered, finding it and recovering it may not be everything. However, Karl's version of buried treasure finding is within reach of anyone with the willingness to try.

And a copy of this book couldn't hurt a bit!

Some years ago you could still pick up a new copy of this book for less than ten bucks. I urged treasure hunters to buy one (or two) before they vanished. Anybody who took my advice is a happy camper today!

The RAM reprint is a trade paperback (8 �" x 5 �", Wraps). It is a revision of the First Edition. The first printing was in 1972; it was revised and reprinted in 1974; and reprinted again in 1979.

Karl's very useful Bibliography was replaced with a much shorter version. Some of the numerous B&W photos were replaced. And - no surprise here! - Appendix D "Building Your Own Treasure Detector" was removed. Charles Garrett saw no point in teaching treasure hunters how to build their own metal detector!

Many copies of this book were read and re-read, taken in the field and consulted by campfire light. It is quite rare to locate a copy in Fine or better condition!

As a kid Chapter XIX "Buried vs. Sunken Treasure" was eye-opening. I'd read countless stories of huge, unfound lost treasure ships. The fact is these are out of reach of almost everyone. And, as those who salvage the SS John Berry discovered, finding it and recovering it may not be everything. However, Karl's version of buried treasure finding is within reach of anyone with the willingness to try.

And a copy of this book couldn't hurt a bit!

The RAM reprint is a trade paperback (8 �" x 5 �", Wraps). It is a revision of the First Edition. The first printing was in 1972; it was revised and reprinted in 1974; and reprinted again in 1979.

Karl's very useful Bibliography was replaced with a much shorter version. Some of the numerous B&W photos were replaced. And - no surprise here! - Appendix D "Building Your Own Treasure Detector" was removed. Charles Garrett saw no point in teaching treasure hunters how to build their own metal detector!

Many copies of this book were read and re-read, taken in the field and consulted by campfire light. It is quite rare to locate a copy in Fine or better condition!

CF FANS WON'T REGRET READING THIS GREAT ACTION PACKED LOVE STORY!!

WOW!! I want to say to all the Christine Feehan fans who have been disappointed with some of her past stories that she listen to her fans and she is back to being the excellent storyteller we all knew she was. Leopard's Prey is about the story. Sometimes I felt like I was reading the Godfather, but with a new uptake on it with Leopards!!

Leopard's Fury is not sex sex sex this is action packed fierce Leopards and them protecting there mates. I fell in love with the heroine Evangeline Trege which we met a few books back in the series and her Fierce Leopard Mate Alonzo Massi "aka" Fyodor Amurov. I am almost speechless at how great this couple is. OMG Evangeline has a fierce alpha female Leopard Bebe.

Lots of Kick Ass action and ask question later to all of Alonzo's enemies. We get to spend a lot of time with all the previous lead characters from the other Leopard People series. It almost felt like a reunion of all the characters. Emma's baby is born. There is a bit of repetitive sentences, but not many. It won't bother you. When we do get to the sex about 63% into the story its pure sensual sexy hot sex!! Leopards Fury is about the story, the action and the falling in love of a couple and less about the sex!!

As a very long time Fan of Christine Feehan I can't express how much I loved this story and I am so excited that CF is back to writing in her former style but has bought her stories into the world of today!!

I Highly Recommend Leopard's Fury!! You won't regret reading it.

Leopards

I love her books I can't wait from them to come out and then I get upset because I read them too fast. This one was a little different never had a mafia boss as bossy as this one basically. Evangeline has her own bakery when she meets the bad boy alpha leopard. He knows he should stay away because he is bad. His life doesn't need to touch her life but he can't help himself he has to have her to calm his beast. Love this book was a little different like I said before I still liked it. Had some of the characters from other books which I always enjoy hearing that side of the books again. Now just waiting for another book.

Christina Feehan is my #1 author. I await in anticipation for her books whether it be the Leopard Series, Drake Sisters, Ghostwalkers, or my favorite series The Carpathians. Christina has a way of transporting you to the story. You feel every emotion her characters feel... If you ever feel the need to get away and recharge read a Christina Feehan book... I loved Leopard's Fury. Alonzo was Evangeline's Iceman. He was her guardian, lover, the keeper of her BeBe... Evangeline was the calm to Alonzo and his leopard... a story of both protecting and loving one another... I sit on pins and needles waiting for the next in the Leopard series...

About the Author
Dr Graham Cairns, UK, 1971, is an academic and author in the field of architecture who has written extensively on film, advertising and political communication. He has held Visiting Professor positions at universities in Spain, the UK, Mexico, the Gambia, South Africa and the US. He has worked in architectural studios in London and Hong Kong and previously founded and ran a performing arts group, Hybrid Artworks, that specialised in video installation and performance writing.

Architecture of the screen

This book sets out to upturn some conventions about how architecture appropriates film. It states that it turns a scenography approach into a cinematographic one. It does. I found it revealing in its general theme and in its details. The different (and very different) sections, are each full of fascinating details and unexpected connections between film, architecture, philosophy, art etc. Sometimes, it goes too far and the author let's his range of knowledge get in the way of a clear argument. But the range of subjects linked into the overall theme is impressive. It's very well and clearly written despite using some obscure references - and the footnotes are useful in explaining some theoretic concepts and technical issues. It's equally about film and architecture and doesn't seem to favour one or the other. Well worth the time (and sometimes difficulty) in reading.

Idea davvero molto originale!

Con questo volumetto ci addentriamo nel cinema di oggi per avvicinarci al mondo della psiche. Ecco alcuni film da vedere o rivedere. "Chi ha sentito parlare di una diagnosi, ad esempio, di `Sindrome di Asperger', pu� vedere `Zoran' e farsi un'idea pi� precisa di cosa sia, al di l� dell' `etichetta'. In `Reality' di Garrone vengono fotografate alla perfezione alcune distorsioni che portano sovente alla stigmatizzazione, non riconoscimento, minimizzazione di problemi legati alla sofferenza psicotica, che se curati tempestivamente potrebbero essere risolti o quanto meno gestiti meglio. E di cui lo spettatore medio probabilmente ignorerebbe l'esistenza anche dopo aver visto il film. In `Supercondriaco' anche un cinefilo potrebbe non sapere che il protagonista in realt� soffre di una sindrome ossessivo-compulsiva con rupofobia e non di una `semplice ipocondria'. Ozpetek nel recentissimo `Allacciate le cinture' descrive le fasi di reazione alla perdita secondo il modello di K�bler-Ross. Altri esempi: parlo di stalking tramite `L'inferno', diretto da Claude Chabrol, un film non certo recentissimo; dei meccanismi psicologici dell'abuso e dipendenza da internet e cyber-porn in `Don Jon'; passando per l'inquietudine, labilit� affettiva e depressione disforica di `Blue Jasmine'".

"Dsm-Cinema" � un libro per trovare se stessi dedicato ai cinefili. Assolutamente da leggere.

libro assolutamente sconsigliato, inutile

libro inutile, acquistarlo � un errore in cui si pu� cadere solo se non si ha avuto occasione di sfogliare il libro.
un esempio per tutti: l'analisi del film reality di matteo garrone consta di due pagine, di cui una � occupata con scontatissime sinossi e scheda del film, l'unica analisi psicologica presente ci dice che il protagonista soffre di una psicosi. A posto.
Da evitare assolutamente.
