About the Author
Lindzee Armstrong met her match while attending the local university, although she was technically in high school at the time. She and Mr. Armstrong became engaged quickly, and fell in love even quicker. He wasn't a high school student, but still thoughtfully offered to take her to prom in her wedding dress. She declined. Wearing the wedding dress before the Big Day just seemed weird. A few years after getting married, they welcomed twin boys into the world.


Lindzee loves chick flicks, ice cream, and chocolate, like any true romantic. She believes in sigh-worthy kisses and happily ever afters.

Brook and Luke are best friends and that is all Brook will allow. She set the rules back in high school and has kept them ever since. Besides, she could never trust him, especially now that his dad has died and he's let himself become rather a mess. Too much drinking and women, and too little attention to business.

Brook is doing well in her chosen profession of matchmaker for a world based matchmaking service. In fact she has even found herself the perfect match. Antonio is the one for her.
Luke, however, has never given up loving Brooke and once he gets his life back on track he makes his play to win her over. Brook, the top matchmaker, now has to decide if she is truly supposed to marry Antonio or if she mismatched.

Content: (Keep in mind that I am prudishly strict in my ratings.) There are no sex scenes but it is implied that she sleeps her fiance and that that is normal and acceptable.There is also lot of drinking and it makes it seem that Luke can just go from being an alcoholic to sober with out any problem, which I find unrealistic.
The book is well written, so laying these things aside, I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Sex: our H is promiscuous, but we are spared details; there is some referencing to waking up together, but no intimate details at all. There is some kissing.
Fast and entertaining read. I thought it was enjoyable like an engaging rom/com. I like this author; I wish I had known about the prequel so I could have read it first.

I loved this book! After reading the prequel, I wanted more of Brooke and Luke. And this book definitely delivered what I wanted. Of course, it starts out with them still as friends, Brooke engaged to Antonio. I couldn't stand him. The entire book, I kept hoping that he would slip up because I just couldn't stand to see them together. And of course, seeing how madly in love with her Luke is, despite her rules that keep them as just friends, I was hoping they would get together. Then, in order to save Brooke's job at Toujour, Luke allows himself to be set up on date after date in the hopes that he will find true love. The entire time, I was crossing my fingers and hoping that he wouldn't fall for someone else because he and Brooke needed to be together. The only bad thing about this book is that the next one doesn't revolve around Brooke and Luke, but instead on his fake girlfriend.

"My Bible" For All My Writing Needs and Grammatical Error Corrections

When I was in college, The Gregg Reference Manual was referred to by the professors as "The Bible". Just like the title says, it covers all the bases for all your writing needs at least on the business level of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting. The book gets better with each edition adding new things to keep up with the technology of today's world. My favorite section of the book it the words that sound alike but spelled differently. Whenever I am not sure which word to use, like "Affect" and "Effect", I head to the GRM. If I am not sure on term papers or reports, I head to the GRM. It is a great book for secretaries and administrative assistants. They have added new sections to keep up with computer usage as in my days of high school and college, we were using manual and electric typewriters and computers are now the basic source for typing correspondence, reports, and all the computer software used in today's business world. I will always buy the latest edition, even though earlier editions, they only change a few words or things, but this is the best reference book to have in your library like a dictionary and thesaurus is.

The ISBN code is for the Eighth Canadian Edition, which is what I received and is what you will probably receive if you order from this seller, because even though I have made a complaint to them about this, they continue to post the same thing at Amazon.

So she finds a nice couple to be her parents and starts over, bound to do it right this time. Her second chance comes at a price as she is pretending to be 16 years old again but this time, she knows what she wants out of life.

The late Louis P. Pojman was Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the author, editor, or coeditor of more than twenty books.

Excellent context, fragile binding

Very interesting textbook! It's more or less a collection of writings of philosophers and articles rather than a textbook that boils down and explains the ideas or focuses on philosophy as a whole subject. Many subjects are covered and the book always contains opposing views so there's nothing to suggest a bias of opinion.

The only problem I had with the book was in its physical being; it's a pretty large book, but it's a softcover with flimsy, glossy pages (like those in a fashion magazine or typical hardcover textbook) so it was really hard to use it without damaging it. I was constantly worried about ripping a page while flipping through it or cracking the spine when I opened it since I purchased it new with the intention of re-selling it to minimize my expenses and wished to keep it as nice as possible. I think this should have been printed in hardcover because of its size, or at least been given proper paper pages so it had a little more stability (my public health book was a big paperback but because it had actual paper pages and not the glossy ones it was much more sturdy and easy to use).

Overall it was a pretty nice book and I ended up loving my philosophy class and traded this in for a very nice price when I was done, so I guess everything was alright at the end, so it gets 5 stars.

Renting: a little worn, but the lower price is worth it

I am renting this textbook and it is a little less neater than I would prefer. The writing within the textbook is relatively untouched, however the corners are frayed and the plastic is peeling off the covers. When it comes to paying a lower price on Amazon vs. the price my college was offering, the fraying is a very very small Issue. Overall, renting this book with Amazon is worth it.

Kleiner's freewheeling portrait gallery focuses on corporate mavericks of the 1950s, '60s and '70s who pioneered self-managing work teams, responsiveness to customers, grassroots organizing and other ways to imbue corporations with a sense of the value of human relationships. Starting with British management scientist Eric Trist, whose experiments in industrial democracy in the 1940s laid the groundwork for U.S. managerial innovations of the 1980s, Kleiner afterward profiles General Foods manager Lyman Ketchum, who launched the work-team concept at a Topeka pet-food plant in the early 1970s; he then discusses how Royal Dutch/Shell in England switched from rigid numbers-based forecasting to "scenario planning," a method of predicting alternative patterns of global energy demand. The heretics that concern Kleiner, most recently an editor for The Whole Earth Catalog, are modern-day dissidents working for U.S. companies who chose to advocate change during the 1960s and 1970s. The changes ranged from experimental plants to new corporate boardroom philosophies. GM especially illustrated the latter when it nominated to its board of directors Rev. Leon Sullivan, who subsequently became "one of the key figures of corporate change." Like religious heretics, corporate heretics have encountered resistance to their new ideas, and some saw their careers effectively destroyed. But out of these new ideas came such concepts as management teams, the pursuit of excellence, the striving for corporate social responsibility, and shareholder activism. While Kleiner's book is packed with the names of corporate heretics, some of them are not clearly identified and their contribution to the corporate change movement is not really made clear. Inquiry and Inquisition

Never judge a book by its cover - particularly its blurb. On first glance, The Age of Heretics seems askew, a tract on business revolution for "corporate leaders" interested in anything but. It purportedly chronicles the "recreation" of institutions, an eccentric term when left unhyphenated. It's described in alarming code words, such as "magisterial" (read, "long"). Why would anyone bother with a book like this?
Because it's terrific. And because the bland fa�ade is disguising a remarkable reality. The Age of Heretics offers one of the few compelling, intelligent, thoroughly researched histories of the field of organizational development. Focusing largely on the 1960s and 1970s, Art Kleiner details the origins of T-Groups, Theory X and Theory Y, scenario planning, systems thinking, and much more. He proves particularly adept at summarizing an approach or technique succinctly, as if in passing, and all the while in the context of corporate change movements. Perhaps Kleiner errs on the side of the Great Man Theory of History ("there was one man who could do it, and his name was ..."), but he does demonstrate how OD can prove revolutionary to the modern corporation. And we all know what fate befalls the revolutionary.
For that is part of Kleiner's history: how the OD early adopters so often sowed the seeds of their own downfall. Perhaps they evolved from enthusiastic to monomaniacal. Perhaps they exacerbated their cultish image by experimenting with LSD. Perhaps they merely stepped on the wrong toes. Whatever the reason, the drugs or the shoes, they blew their own trumpets, then whimpered the blues.
As the title suggests, Kleiner dubs these forerunners "heretics," and even adopts a framework of comparisons to medieval knights, millenarians, Pelagians, and the like. The comparisons don't do any harm, and may even add a soupcon of panache, although a few are a stretch. Likening twelfth-century intellectual Peter Abelard to pharmaceutically enhanced 1960s visionaries does the great philosopher a disservice, not least because he's not an ideal model of universalism and holistic thinking. One might also argue that Kleiner misrepresents Parzival's dilemma when he writes of the plight of the OD consultant who fears to lose his job. Parzival encounters an obviously suffering king and must decide whether to ask "what afflicts thee?"; the consultant encounters an organization and must first recognize that there is any affliction in the first place.
Such criticisms are minor and admiring. The Age of Heretics is what the English like to call "a rollicking good read": fast-paced, persuasive, and written for adults, not sixth-graders. (Rare is the business author who would think to describe In Search of Excellence, accurately, as Manichaean.) This is not a book for generic "corporate leaders." It's for OD professionals and agents of change. If you pitch your tent in either camp, bring this book along for companionship.

Remember the Revolution?

This book should remind anyone of an age to be in a position of significant and high-level corporate change responsibility of opportunity lost. In a societal post-culture where it's stylish to be outlandish, different, revolutionary and heretical, Kleiner illustrates for us the substantive difficulties faced by substantive revolutionary thinkers (and doers!) in developing the plans for socially responsible corporate transformation.
The Age of Heretics is almost unfairly engrossing (I read it in a single sitting). Its superb and nuanced documentation at times reads almost like an additional narrative. And Kleiner's wonderfully accessible writing makes this intellectual history of organizational development speak to those otherwise put off by the cerebral work.
Oddly, those most in need of a recovery of revolutionary spirit or heretical passion - contemporary OD/MD/HR executives- won't read it. After all, even though interesting history, it is still history and those folks are now too busy figuring out what happy face button everyone can wear for the fiscal quarter. On my read, this is the lesson of Kleiner's history; that is, abandoning the revolutionary, hopeful,Pelagian spirit and resignation to work within the system enables the system to eat you.
Also oddly, Kleiner's history will likely be dismissed by socially conscious and critically-minded business/organization/management Marxist academics, as just not explicitly critical enough of the "one-dimensionality," technocracy and precipitous consumerism of the capitalist system, which is of course what identifies the work of McGregor, Lewin and the early NTL'ers as heresy. The lesson from Kleiner's work here is that even small scale revolutionary efforts establish precedents for larger ones, and that it's better to try something than simply continue to pontificate - as academics devoted to studying the corporate organization critically are prone to do.
Consequently, both groups miss a valuable history of the connection between the serious committed efforts to change society through corporate transformation by these early renegades and the larger macro socio-philosiohical pronouncements of counterculture theorists. Indeed, Kleiner's book is voraciously consumed by an audience with a particular spirit. Unfortunately, that is few of us. I suspect I speak for all of us in that audience in suggesting that the sequel - The Hour of Reconstruction - is eagerly awaited.

A facinacing read in changing workplace cultures.

The heroes of Kleiner's book are concerned with reducing the psychic costs of work by
better aligning the personal hopes and dreams of employees and the corporations they
work for through organizational development (OD). Kleiner's subject matter ties in
well with those, such as Margaret Blair, who emphasize the contribution to wealth
creation of firm specific human capital. While Blair appears primarily concerned
with enhancing the ability of corporations to create wealth, Kleiner acknowledges
they are already good at that task; the issues he raises are in some way more
fundamental...how can we reorganize corporate systems so that they reinforce
democracy and other cherished human values?

For students of OD, or anyone who has been a process facilitator, the book is full
of fascinating insights into the people we have tried to emulate...people like
Douglas McGregor, Kurt Lewin, Chris Argyris, Saul Alinsky and Warren Bennis. I
learned, for example that Charlie Krone's leaks to David Jenkins for the book Job
Power resulted in Charlie's virtual "house arrest" at Procter and Gamble and I
learned the semi-autonomous work groups didn't really have as much authority as
Jenkins reported. Kleiner's heroes recognized that institutions, such as
corporations, are social constructs. They became masters in group dynamics and
building trust so that more effective communication took place, especially around
team building. These heroic figures helped many corporations go through a process of
fundamental reexamination... leading to a shift away from the bureaucratic military
model to the more dynamic matrix, self-managed, and participatory models of today.

Most of the book chronicles the history of the National Training Laboratories (NTL)
and Stanford Research Institute with the primary business examples being Shell Oil,
General Foods and Procter & Gamble. Kleiner is at his best in explaining the
history of NTL and how the youth culture of the 1960's impacted OD consultants. He
focuses on the psychological changes, which often resulted from group
self-examination, rather than on shifts in actual power which have resulted from the
growth of employee ownership and the rise of fiduciary capitalism. One of my primary
concerns (see [...]) has been to show how these movements
converge and are complimentary. Perhaps Kleiner will steer his considerable talent a
little further in that direction by including an examination of these other
movements in his next book, The Hour of Reconstruction. However, The Age of Heretics
stands well on its own; anyone interested in changing workplace cultures will find a
fascinating read.

About the Author

SCOTT O. LILIENFELD�received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and editor of the�Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice,�Associate Editor of�Applied and Preventive Psychology,�and a regular columnist for�Scientific American Mind�magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

STEVEN JAY LYNN�received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was� recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000-2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007,�Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the�Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

LAURA L. NAMY�received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the�Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

NANCY J. WOOLF�received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of�Science and Consciousness Review �and� Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Almost identical to 1st edition.

I used the 1st edition of this book (loose leaf) in a class where the professor insisted on the brand new 2nd edition. It is almost word-for-word identical. There doesn't seem to be a perceivable difference. You can very safely get by with the old edition. This textbook is one of the worst examples of putting out a new edition for the sake of ripping off students that I've ever encountered

Great textbook - does everything right!

First of all, I would just like to say that I used this textbook for a Psychology 101 class at the University of Washington. If you go to UW, try and get this textbook NOT AT THE UW BOOK STORE! They will try and sell you a "UW Version" which you cannot sell back since it has a different ISBN even though it's identical to this version.

This is a great textbook. The tone is involving, it's not dry at all and even though some of the metaphors seem corny, it's a nice change of pace from what I was used to. It makes the reading almost "light" in a sense, where you can just understand it when you read it once - you don't have to read the same sentence over and over trying to understand it. It presses the same five topics into your head and provides constant examples of each on almost every page (Correlation doesn't equal causation, Occam's Razor, etc). This is a nice and non-intrusive way to remind you to think scientifically while reading.

The book also has a large focus on defusing "psuedoscience", products or advertisements which rely on faulty scientific methods or thinking. As a relatively intelligent college student at decent university, I thought I would be immune to these sort of fallacies in everyday life, but I was surprisingly wrong! The text teaches you about all the sneaky way advertisers try to trick you and the techniques they use, so you can avoid them. I found myself falling into some of these traps before, but after I read the book I recognized this pseudoscience right away. They also point out plenty of scientifically-based tests to disprove "mainstream psuedoscience" like astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellers, etc etc with empirically backed studies.

The MyPsychLab feature is surprisingly useful if you can gain access to it. If you can find it for under $45, I would say look into purchasing it. It's a nice way to study over and over before tests, and includes flash cards, quizzes, pretests, tests, and more for study purposes. The only problem with this is that your professor will likely draw off different test questions then the ones provided by MyPsychlab.

In the end, I felt like I could have gained a lot of knowledge simply by reading the text. Combined with the instruction of a class, I feel way more ready to think scientifically and recognize my own scientific mistakes. It's very interesting and relevant science, and you will find yourself smiling as you realize how true these things are that you've never even thought of!

Excellent material and communication

The editors and authors did an amazing job at engaging the reader without seeming annoying or boring. I kept flipping through page after page (long chapters, but really interesting stuff) and never found myself having to "hate the authors." It has that "modern" writing style that is somewhat colloquial because they are conversing with you from beginning to end, so it makes it a lot more inclusive. Very happy my professor chose this book; got it in hardback and plan to keep it.
