Will Injustice Break Their Family Ties?

Honor Bright leaves her English family to accompany her sister to America, thinking she can always return to England, but realizing that her life may take drastic turns. The Last Runaway thus opens with its underlying premise that our choices require actions, which may come at personal cost. After a month-long voyage filled with nausea, Honor steps on American soil and travels by stagecoach to Ohio, only to see her sister die of yellow fever. Alone in the backwoods of Ohio and living among strangers, she must find her place in a land completely unlike the home she pines for.

Honor is flustered by her new environment--differing landscapes, flowers, food and birds. "Even a tree as solid and steady as an oak was transformed in America into something alien." Jarring to her are the independent, enterprising Americans who are unafraid to speak their minds. The "rickety" houses made of wood and muddy streets may be a metaphor for her difficulty in finding stability. She marries Jack Haymaker, a dairy farmer, hoping for security. Soon she learns that 1850s Ohio is the most active state in the Underground Railroad.

Do Quakers sworn to honesty tell white lies to save slaves? Should the Haymaker family help runaways when the Fugitive Slave Act not only forbids it, but also might take away their farm as a penalty? Will Honor continue her Underground activities when repudiated by her husband's family?

The book is honest, but takes a while to ramp up. Honor's character, although true to Quaker tradition, would have benefited from some additional spice and depth. Characters face moral contradictions and this is a grand subtlety of the book. Villainous Slave hunter Donovan manages to draw sympathy from the reader. Shrewd and earthy, Belle, who wears a plain hat in her store so as not to compete with her customer, but dons her fanciest hat outside for advertising is a complex, compelling character.

Brimming with the significant role Quakers played in moving slaves to the north and freedom, the book highlights difficult choices faced by those opposed to slavery. Living a principled life in the midst of practical realities is like walking a tightrope. Right versus wrong is depicted here as a gray area. Honor finally realizes she is but one small link in a large chain. Will her actions break the chain? The Last Runaway leaves the reader with much food for thought.

Review of The Last Runaway

I am trying to figure out today what made this book so unputdownable last night (I was up reading it until I finished at 3am) and the only thing I can come up with is the character of Honor Bright. She is such a sympathetic character and I wanted to know what happened to her.

The Last Runaway is the story of Honor Bright, a young Quaker woman who leaves England to escape an unpleasant past that is not of her own doing, and her attempt to fit into the American society in a small town in Ohio. There are a cast of interesting characters in Donovan and Belle, Jack Haymaker, Adam and Abigail, and more and decisions that need to be made by Honor that foreshadow a deeper meaning behind her name.

There were familiar aspects to this novel, anyone who has read Uncle Tom's Cabin will recognize similarities between the stories - but this is more dealing with the other side, what happens to those who disobey the Fugitive Slave Act. It's a life filled with secrets and lies in the midst of a people who refuse to lie.

So this ended up being an unputdownable book for me. It moved quickly, had heart and characters that tugged at my heartstrings, and it was a story that was above and beyond interesting. There were little bits of flavor throughout it as well that helped with the story, making it more personable. The difference between English quilting and American, recipes, culture, and more.

This is a great book for fans of historical fiction who are interested in immigration, the underground railroad, Quakers, and the early pioneer midwest.

Excellent Analysis of the Struggle of Maintaining Principles

I am not going to overly describe the content of the book in this review. The publishers have provided a more than apt description of the text in the product summary and would be readers may even sample the beginning of the book here on Amazon. Instead, I want to talk more about the essence of this book since I feel the spirit of Tracy Chevalier's works is what I take with me when I'm done instead of individual plot points.

In The Last Runaway, Honor Bright feels a lot of things with a passion that puts her at odds with her religion, the family units she becomes a member of in America, and her faith. The passion does not bubble over in fiery fits but instead simmers below the surface and manifests itself with silences - both literal and figurative.

While I am not a Quaker, I am a deeply religious person with strong political views that differ greatly from those of many others in my religion. When one faces the brick wall of your personal principles contrasting with other's interpretation of the obligations of faith and the ties one is supposed to have with family, there are no easy answers and Honor discovers this and struggles with it through the text.

A smattering of fellow Quakers, a feisty milliner, her slave-catcher brother/potential love interest, and a family present themselves to Honor and each guides her, either purposefully, forcefully, or accidentally, toward finding her place in America and the world. For any of us who have left the areas we were born in, I think there is a lot to relate to. The place we spent our formative years - good or bad - provides the standard we contrast everything else against. Sometimes life seems better, and sometimes it seems worse. For Honor, finding the good is not an easy task since her new life throws bad at her in several instances.

When compared to Tracy's other works, I would say this is a strong addition. It strikes me as almost the antithesis of Falling Angels - a book where hope visited tragedy. Instead, in The Last Runaway, hope feels like a consistent offering that tragedy sometimes visit. Within the text, I found several passages that I highlighted in order to revisit their beauty - a hallmark of Chevalier's work, in my opinion.

Now that I know the fate of the story and the progression of the character's through it, I will revisit this book again one day to appreciate the journey more -- it was a good, contemplative one.

It looks at the conditions in the trenches and the field hospitals during the First World War, the circumstances that led to McCrae's writing the poem, the effect of its publication on morale and enlistment, and the history of "poppy day" remembrance traditions from 1919 to the present. The poem appears in full on the first page, followed by a combination of poetry, painting, and background material on the era. The 16 lines John McCrae wrote following a friend's death in the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 survived and flourished in the insanity of WW I, and in this work, continue to evince the same sturdy beauty as do the scarlet poppies blowing in Flanders fields. The poem, ``In Flanders Fields,'' has acquired so much emotional weight it could collapse any book focusing on it. Granfield (Cowboy, 1994, etc.) doesn't let that happen. Her strong, sensitive treatment, with Wilson's matching illustrations, catch the torch thrown ``from failing hands'' and wield it to illuminate the story of not only the poet-doctor, but also the war itself. Granfield deftly interweaves the lines of the poem with informative short essays on life in the trenches, accounts of McCrae's experiences in his field hospital, the burgeoning popularity of poppies as symbols of remembrance, and more. Wilson's paintings beautifully evoke place, time, and incident. The incorporation of black-and-white archival materials, such as postcards, posters, and photographs, adds yet another layer of interest, while maps on the endpapers provide further information. The book revivifies the poem, placing it so well on its feet in its world that it's difficult to think of the classroom in which the book would not be of use. Yes, this poem is contained in various anthologies. However, its import and its gravity seem to be better represented in this noble offering. At one cent shy of a dollar, it is reasonably priced and can now stand alone and proud on your Kindle shelf. Millions died horribly in this increasingly forgotten war...give one final salute to their once-vital being. Buy this poem, read this poem,....and never forget.

I have used this book as part of my Veteran's Day lesson in my high school classes for several years. The beautiful illustrations and story add a lot to an already beautiful and meaningful poem. This copy was a gift for a friend, an elementary school teacher, who also loves it.

A five-part organization of each case covers: an introduction that discusses the presenting problem and background information about the client; conceptualization of therapeutic goals and strategies; process descriptions of actual client contacts (it explains what happened in sessions and how the therapist's relationship with the client changed over time); outcome sections describing the result of the work done between therapist and client; and discussion explanations of what the author/therapist might have done differently. In addition, the author describes his or her personal and professional growth that resulted from this encounter with a troubled youngster. For child and adolescent counselors beginning their journey as therapists.

I have to assume that my little casebook meets a need in the field because it's in its third edition. With each new edition, I've added and deleted cases in order to be responsive to changes in the counselors' working environment. In the second edition, I replaced five long-term therapy cases with ones that illustrated brief counseling strategies. Prevailing economic conditions favored short-term interventions, as they still do. In this third edition, I've replaced three private practice cases with ones set in schools. The new cases deal with major problem areas, such as sexual abuse, addictions, dual diagnoses, seriously dysfunctional families, and foster care. School counselors tell me that these are the kinds of cases that they are seeing. The sum is a balanced set of case studies that reflect today's practice in school, agency, and private practice settings.

I think it's significant that several contributors chose case studies from their early days of training and supervised practice. Some have included supervisors as coauthors. This should encourage those of us who train counselors. Those debriefing sessions with a supportive mentor, confronting personal issues, and even the tedious requirement to transcribe dialog have a powerful cumulative effect on the emerging therapist.

This is a hard book to organize because each case is idiosyncratic. It would be nice if I could pigeonhole each case as illustrative of a single counseling method, but real-life cases just don't work that way, so I've simply put them in order of client age.

There's a summary chart (following the table of contents) that allows an at-a-glance comparison of the 16 cases. For example, the reader will see that Suzanne M. Hobson, an elementary-school counselor, employs child-centered therapy to treat a 4-year-old boy suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from physical and sexual abuse.

Each case is organized as follows:

Introduction. The initial paragraphs lay out the presenting problem and background information about the client. The reader should know that in every case the identities of clients have been disguised. (This section is not titled.)

Conceptualization. Here the author discusses therapeutic goals and strategies. The author may justify the use of a specific theoretical orientation, such as Adlerian, systems, cognitive, behavioral. A rationale for diagnosis is also discussed.

Process. Actual client contacts are described. What happened in the sessions? How did the therapist's relationship with the client change over time?

Outcome. The author describes the results, for better or worse. I did not ask authors to present their most successful cases. I was after the cases that touched them.

Discussion. With the benefit of hindsight, the author explains what he or she might have done differently. In addition, the author describes personal and professional growth that resulted from this encounter with a troubled youngster.

Authors have provided their e-mail addresses (see "Biographical Statements") and have assured me that they would love to hear from readers. Take them up on it and get in touch.

I anticipate that readers will develop strong feelings about these cases. At the risk of waxing eloquent, I think this book beats with the pulse of living psychotherapy.

What an awesome book!

Each case study in this book is told by the treating therapist/counselor/social worker/psychiatrist. They describe and critique their most challenging case in dealing with an adolescent. The problems addressed in the cases are varied and range from moderate to severe. We are using this book in a graduate-level counseling course to analyze each case and come up with alternative treatment methods than those that were used. This text gives a deep, in-depth look into the work and feelings of a therapist and their most memorable adolescent client. Highly recommend!

Pinnell describes methods and processes that are fair to all parties and often result in reasonable settlements to knotty construction problems without resorting to the courtroom. My only disappointment is that I didn't write the book myself. Congratulation, Steve, on a nice piece of work. If everyone would follow the recommendations contained in the book us construction consultants would not have much work.

Great Resource

This is not a quick read, but a well written overview of the basics of well log analysis. It taught me what I needed to know and answered all my questions to get through a petroleum geology exercise in analyzing logs, and I had a leg up on everyone in the class. If you put the time in to read this it is a great tool.
