What is the origin of our universe? What are dark matter and dark energy? What is our role in the universe as human beings capable of knowledge? What makes us intelligent cognitive agents seemingly endowed with consciousness? Scientific research across both the physical and cognitive sciences raises fascinating philosophical questions. Philosophy and the Sciences For Everyone introduces these questions and more. It begins by asking what good is philosophy for the sciences before examining the following questions:

  • The origin of our universe
  • Dark matter and dark energy
  • Anthropic reasoning in philosophy and cosmology
  • Evolutionary theory and the human mind
  • What is consciousness?
  • Intelligent machines and the human brain
  • Embodied Cognition.

Each chapter includes an introduction, summary and study questions and there is a glossary of technical terms. Designed to be used on the corresponding Philosophy and the Sciences online course offered by the University of Edinburgh this book is also a superb introduction to central topics in philosophy of science and popular science.

A unique and engaging interdisciplinary introduction
By MLS
I am using this book alongside the coursera online course to teach an introductory class made up of both philosophy and science students. We are partway through the course and so far I have found that this book is a great way to get students to start engaging with science from a philosophical point of view. Although it is designed around the online course of the same name (which so far has been excellent and a great resource for those coming to the topic without any background in philosophy of science) it also stands alone as a unique entrance to the topic. While the first chapter gives a brief introduction to the philosophy of science enabling the reader to situate the current debates, the book is unlike typical philosophy of science introductions as it then jumps straight in to engaging with cosmology and the cognitive sciences. The book is clearly written, and accessible to those without philosophical or scientific training while engaging with sufficiently challenging topics such that whatever your background, it is likely that there will be new and interesting material to engage with. The authors provide plenty of pointers to additional sources for the interested reader as well as questions at the end of each chapter to help the reader think through and remember the key points in the text. I am enjoying using the book and would recommend it for promoting interdisciplinary discussions in introductory philosophy of science classes.

Philosophy and the Sciences: recommended to all
By Jan
Books that are originally designed to be used as background material to a course not always turn out to be good reading for people that have not taken that particular course. Philosophy and the Sciences For Everyone by Michela Massimi et al. is a welcome exception to this rule. It is a very nice book for anyone interested in questions regarding philosophy, science and especially the points where the two meet.

What good is philosophy for science and what can science learn from philosophy are the central questions this book. Questions that are especially interesting regarding Stephen Hawking’s recent proclamation of the death of philosophy.

The first part of the book covers topics in philosophy of science like laws, underdetermination of theory by evidence and confronts these with developments in current cosmology. The second part of the book does the same for topics in philosophy of the cognitive sciences. In doing this in this manner the reader gets a good inside in exactly how co-operation between philosophy and the sciences can be mutual beneficial. And all this written down in a manner where newcomers to the subject as well as the more experienced readers can learn something new.

In short a highly recommended book. Michela Massimi and her Edinburgh colleagues have done an excellent job.

An accessible guide to some of the most interesting areas of Philosophy of Science
By Julie Mary McGlynn
The division between philosophy and science has led to strange preconceptions of these fields. Those unfamiliar with the history of science and its mishaps often presuppose it gives us privileged, “objective” knowledge of reality. Others (including some scientists) can see philosophers as sceptics who refuse to engage with empirical data. I believe that this book goes a long way to dispelling these myths. It shows real life philosophers engaging with science, and scientists weighing the evidence for their conclusions. Resulting in a very interesting and enjoyable read!
What makes this book special is the collaboration between philosophers and scientists. The text is clear, allowing those of all backgrounds to learn not only scientific facts & theories but how these are formulated and how science is “done”. It engages with a wide range of problems in philosophy of science, like what makes a theory good and what criteria we can use for preferring one over another. I recommend this book for anyone interested in well-informed philosophy of science and/or well thought out, self-reflexive, science.
