November Rain: A Carl Houseman Mystery, by Donald Harstad

Carl Houseman, the deputy sheriff of rural Nation County, Iowa, leaves home to enter the world of international intrigue in the sixth in Donald Harstad's critically acclaimed series.

Houseman's daughter, Jane, has been studying abroad in the UK. When her best friend Emma Schiller has been kidnapped, Houseman, desperate to protect his daughter and help her friend, accepts Scotland Yard’s invitation to take him on as a consultant.

Emma’s trail leads to the door of her former professor--and ex-lover--Dr. Robert Northwood, whose impassioned activism on behalf of a pair of Muslim political prisoners has landed him unwittingly in cahoots with a cadre of dangerous individuals. It seems like a simple hoax, except that if Houseman doesn't track down the professor’s co-conspirators, the consequences will be anything but simple--and the harm that will result could be global in Harstad's gripping new installment in his outstanding series.

Houseman is Back
By R. Dunbar
Carl Houseman, in this sixth installment of Donald Harstad's poular series, is as sharply intelligent and funny as ever. In this adventure, Houseman is sent from his familiar and comfortable surroundings in fictional Nation County Iowa, ans assigned to investigate a kidnapping case involving a Maitland County resident in London. Carl's interest in the case is compounded by the fact that his own daughter, jane, Is a roommate of the missing woman.
At various times over the course of the series, Carl has dealt with a wide variety of crimes: kidnapping, murder (and more murder), drug
dealing, faux vampirism, and home grown terrorists. This time out, he is dealing again with terrorists, this time on an international stage - and therein lies part of the conflict. Carl, being a typical methodical, head-down and push forward type of small town investigator, really has no desire to go to London, other than, of course, he gets a free trip to London, albeit in the company of Carson Hiilberg, the socially inept county attorney of Nation County, and he can keep a boots-on the ground eye out for Jane's safety.
After a somewhat slow start, involving a lot of back story, the narrative picks up speed upon Carl's arrival in London. He only has two weeks to wrap up his investigation which is bad enough, but he is also impeded by the fact that the case is going cold: it's several weeks after the fact before he even reaches London. As an American cop ( more specifically, a small town deputy sheriiff ), he has no jurisdiction on British soil, and,of course, New Scotland Yard is reluctant to share information with him. What else could get in the way?
Harstad relies on his broad knowledge of law enforcement and solid storytelling skills, along with just the right amount of humor, to make the story
a real nail-biter.

A Really Good Read
By Robert A. Johnson
I give this novel five stars, but with one rather glaring qualification, as I explain. Harstad's Carl Houseman mysteries are written in a lovely way, both comfortable and compelling. They hold your attention and are quite hard to put down. They have a cozy midwestern take on the world. A sketch of the plot of November Rain can be found in some of the other reviews. My one complaint is this: The number of typos, misspellings and typesetting computer screw-ups is astonishing. In this 306-page novel, I estimate there are at least 50, and probably closer to 100, of them. Clearly, nobody proofread this book in its final stages of production. Early on, the errors were so numerous I almost gave up. The error rate seems to drop off as the story develops, and I'm glad I didn't abandon the book, but the reader should be forewarned. Frankly, I cannot recall any of the 2000+ novels I've read over my lifetime having more than two or three printing/editing errors, and in recent decades, this number has been essentially zero. Crooked Lane Books should be ashamed of itself.

Really a good read
By M. Miller
It's a middle of the road novel novel for Houseman, quite enjoyable though, and it took me awhile to locate a copy. Having a 30 year career as a Deputy Sheriff, just across the border in Minnesota, I found the subtle humor, and thought process in the "investigating" quite normal for being a Deputy.
You really need to read all the novels, serious but tremendously fun reads.
