Learn it quick!

Great book. I'm very pleased. I got this book because I needed to learn SQL and I needed to learn it quick! Each lesson took me about 15-30 minutes to go through (I read slow, and then I also did a lot of playing around with the databases at work), but it gave me all the background I needed to start programming.

I recommend this book for anyone new to SQL that just needs to learn it quick. It goes through the most commonly used SQL statements and their clauses, gives different examples for the most common DBMS, defines terms (like SQL and DBMS), and is short. There are a lot of advanced topics in the last lessons that he just breezes over (to keep it short), but that's what SQL in 24 hours is for -- to explain advanced topics. Honestly I thought about getting a bigger, more in depth book, but I'm really glad I got this smaller book. I would have been overwhelmed with any others. I felt like this book left off right where I wanted to just jump in and start programming.

Who this book isn't for: People not new to SQL (It just covers the basics and skims over more advanced topics -- but it wasn't written for advanced users; it's just an introduction.), people looking for a book about databases (this book only goes into the basic SQL stuff, though it does mention a couple good practices for database structure), anyone who wants an in-depth book about SQL (it really does just cover the basics).

In short, this book is for newbies who need to learn SQL quickly: just the basics, an intro into more advanced topics, it's very user friendly, easy to follow, and you can get through it in an afternoon if need be. Highly recommended.

This is great for absolute beginners who have a DBMS already installed

This is great for absolute beginners who have a DBMS already installed. I thought the book would walk you through setting one up but it doesn't. For the most part, I understand why as it needs to stay vendor neutral. They say that all the examples given in this book will worth with the list of dbms' they list.

You actually won't learn sql in 10 minutes but most likely be able to get through each chapter within 10 minutes. The exercises aren't difficult and you should get a very rudimentary understanding of sql. I sat through the first 4 chapters without really breaking a sweat.

The book itself is in full color, which is a nice touch, and the paper is high quality. Its a rather small book and that was somewhat disappointing but I guess that's why this is really a beginners book. If you've fidgeted around with sql at work or at home you can probably skip the first four chapters. if you skip the examples on your first go, you can probably finish the book within two hours.

Is this book worth the 24 bucks and change that i spent on it? Absolutely not. Maybe 15 bucks. Mine also had a sticky residue stuck on the back which i can't seem to remove so that's unfortunate.

About the Author
Francis G. Couvares is the E. Dwight Salmon Professor of History and American Studies at Amherst College. He is the author of The Remaking of Pittsburgh: Class and Culture in an Industrializing City 1877-1919 (1984) and editor of Movie Censorship and American Culture, Second Edition (2006).

Martha Saxton is an Associate Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies and the Elizabeth Bruss Reader at Amherst College. She has written biographies of Louisa May Alcott and Jayne Mansfield, as well as Being Good: Women’s Moral Values In Early America (2003), and numerous essays on women in early America.

It includes a “12-step program for script analysis” along with suggestions about how to approach various genres and play structures. “Practice,” the third part, delves into the relationships that dramaturgs forge and offers useful advice about collaborating with other artists. It also includes ideas for audience outreach initiatives such as marketing and publicity plans, educational programs, talkbacks, blogs, and program notes and lobby displays, all of which are often the responsibility of the dramaturg.

About the Author

Michael M. Chemers founded and directs the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Production Dramaturgy Program at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. He is the author of Staging Stigma: A Critical Examination of the American Freak Show.

I got this to read for a class on dramaturgy, not knowing much about the subject, and this book quickly changed that! With an easy writing style, it was a quick and entertaining read. And the anecdotes from the author often helped me understand what he was trying to explain the few times I didn't quite get it reading the sentence the first time. It was also an enjoyable quick read, and full of great info from how to do dramaturgy for a show to the profession's history to different types of influences on dramaturgy throughout the ages. I'd recommend it :)!
