About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

The Calculus textbooks almost all the same

Okay here is my point of view. I am not a student anymore, but my daughter is an Electrical Engineering student.

I am a severly disabled vet with a spinal cord injury, so I have alot of weird nerve and brain issues.

So math is sort of a recreation and therapy, I used to be a software engineer but my brain really does work right anymore.

I get my daughter's textbooks when they are done, plus I have a ton of other textbooks I acquire.

Looking at Stewart or Larson, they are almost the same. Larson has a bit more flash and is slighty better for me the self study. But honestly there is very little difference in the texts.
I have a few Calc textbooks which are not the popular choices for universities, and they are better, but not popular.

One issue is that online courses have forced textbook publishers to come up with online content, so all the textbooks now are geared for cashing in on internet content. So in this case the internet is not improving the educational experience for students.

As a self study, Stewart is worthless. As one reviewer stated, everything is really standardized to fit some testing model. So they present the basics. There are a few sample exercises, but none that really instruct the student on how to approach or solve the harder cases. I assume you are suppossed to figure that out yourself. Textbook to Textbook they take that approach.

As a reference I guess it is okay. But if you really want to understand and learn it, pick up Morris Kline and Adrian Banner. Start there then move onto pure mathematics. It is not an easy way to go, but you will have a better understanding.. Use Stewart as a reference and for some practice exercises.

Good book w/ some drawbacks

Stewart's calculus textbook is a relatively standard development of basic calculus. It is readable with many examples and pictures to aid understanding. It is not a "rigorous" development in the strict (i.e. real analysis) sense - you'll need a supplementary textbook if you want to crack that egg. It does, however, provide students with the ability to solve problems using calculus that they will likely encounter in later courses.

It is not without drawbacks, however. My primary complaint is that while I worked through the later chapters for the first time I was unsure why I was doing what I was. In particular, the chapters on vectors were rather poorly done - they seemed developed enough just to get students through the problem sets. On the other hand, anybody wishing to seriously learn vector calculus will likely have an entire book devoted to the topic.

My only other complaint is the development of differential equations. I understand the purpose of including them in the textbook (they're used in many fields), but you really can't cover much about differential equations in the small chapters devoted to them. Like I said, I understand why the author included the sections, but after learning differential equations properly, I do not feel like those chapters in this textbook served any useful purpose.

Due to the widespread usage of this textbook, it is inevitable that some struggling students (and mathematicians!) will dislike it. If you happen to be a struggling student, check out "Calculus: An Intuitive and Physical Approach" by Morris Kline. It is very cheap, thorough, and will undoubtedly make for an excellent study aid.

Get it if you have to, but if you have a choice: Spivak

If your course requires you to get this book, get it of course. But if you want to learn Calculus from the best Math textbook ever written, get Spivak (Calculus, 4th edition). Also, if you stumble across a copy of Apostol, that's pretty good too (Calculus, Vol. 1: One-Variable Calculus, with an Introduction to Linear Algebra). But Spivak is the best - relevant, well written, engaging, comprehensive.

A Classic

If you are keenly interested in card magic there is every reason to buy this book. It's inexpensive, it's comprehensive, and a terrific resource. I can give it only four stars because I find it terribly hard to learn most of the sleights from the diagrams and descriptions. They're very hard to describe but, when this was written, there was no internet, no DVDs, no way of learning other than one on one or via the printed page. So there are far easier and clearer resources for learning the techniques in this book. Still, it's a classic volume and, particularly if accompanied by a good video reference for the various moves, well worth the money.

Incredible resource

All the Dover Magic Books I've encountered are really well set up for Kindle and this one is no different. Plus, this is such a well-written classic that even if you never put any of the routines into practice or have your own pet sleights from other teachers or personal experience, merely thinking along with the methods as you read this book will make you a better cardician.

As good as you've heard, but the epub edition has some issues

This is an excellent text, with extremely detailed instructions. I'm mostly a novice at this stuff, with a mostly academic interest, and not much yet especially dextrous with my hands, but even I found with dedicated reading, notwithstanding the tiny diagrams, the descriptions are so excellent that you _can_ get this stuff working, and working well. As you may have heard: you don't read this book casually: you read in detail, work slowly, and dedicate yourself to practising. Doing so, you can hardly help but getting somewhere, and potentially somewhere pretty impressive. These are solid techniques, from what my limited experience can tell, some demanding, some less so, and all entirely fascinating.

The reason I can't give it five stars: the epub edition I have contains a fair level of typos and wonky paragraphs I just have to assume come from the same problem; I'm guessing they're mis-scans during optical character recognition missed in subsequent correction; obviously I can't tell quite how it happened at my end. In a very few places, it's bad enough you have to add a step to that careful reading: a forensic step of working out what it _must_ have said, supplemented in my case by grepping around the web, looking for people talking elsewhere about the sleights, toward said working out.

Which is annoying. It's nice there even is an epub, obviously--I find it very convenient to read on my phone in moments of what would otherwise be downtime--but the errors do get in the way.

That said, in fairness, there's only one or two such places it's such a significant problem. Usually, it's just more a stupid optical error, one character in a word you can work out from context, and since it's pretty obvious what was meant, fine, good enough. Still, it'd be nice to see a little more caution in preparing an epub people do pay for.

About the Author
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 1941), is to the Indian subcontinent what Shakespeare is to the English-speaking world. A poet, playwright, painter, and educator, Tagore was also a mystic of great complexity and depth. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

The Cruel Idea Behind Making of a Nation

No wonder why this great poet and literature genius has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Anyone who reads this book clearly gets an understanding as to how much this author has studied human mind and its social aspects that had been troubling the humanity ever since power and materialistic possessions have taken over spiritual freedom.
The book is divided into three parts- Nationalism in the West, Nationalism of Japan and Nationalism in India.
Rabindranath’s idea about a Nation is that of an evolution of a great organization of human mind, wealth, machines and power to control the minds and bodies of all that is surrounding this great artificial body. As per him, Power is a scientific product made in the political laboratory of the Nation, through the dissolution of personal humanity. As per him the West is necessary to the East and vice versa. His main target is the British (whenever he referred as Nation) rule in India and its ill effects on the moral and spiritual efficacies of the people of India. He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. The benefits might be undervalued compared to the exploitation and conflicts it created in those Nations.

A book very much for our times

This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The indictment of suburbia and the car culture that the author presented in The Geography of Nowhere turns apocalyptic in this vigorous, if overwrought, jeremiad. Kunstler notes signs that global oil production has peaked and will soon dwindle, and argues in an eye-opening, although not entirely convincing, analysis that alternative energy sources cannot fill the gap, especially in transportation. The result will be a Dark Age in which "the center does not hold" and "all bets are off about civilization's future." Absent cheap oil, auto-dependent suburbs and big cities will collapse, along with industry and mechanized agriculture; serfdom and horse-drawn carts will stage a comeback; hunger will cause massive "die-back"; otherwise "impotent" governments will engineer "designer viruses" to cull the surplus population; and Asian pirates will plunder California. Kunstler takes a grim satisfaction in this prospect, which promises to settle his many grudges against modernity. A "dazed and crippled America," he hopes, will regroup around walkable, human-scale towns; organic local economies of small farmers and tradesmen will replace an alienating corporate globalism; strong bonds of social solidarity will be reforged; and our heedless, childish culture of consumerism will be forced to grow up. Kunstler's critique of contemporary society is caustic and scintillating as usual, but his prognostications strain credibility. (May)

Kunstler established a writing career criticizing American suburbia (e.g., The Geography of Nowhere, 1993), and his animosity against his bete noire does not abate here. It's a wide--casting, statistics-studded ramble through energy production and technologies, world economic and political history, and climatology that culminates in predictions that the suburbs are doomed. His assertions are always self--confident, sometimes immodestly so, as when he dismisses in toto any possibility that the market, or technologists, will rescue contemporary civilization from a world of declining oil production. Discerning an imminent future of protracted socioeconomic crisis, Kunstler foresees the progressive dilapidation of subdivisions and strip malls, the depopulation of the American Southwest, and, amid a world at war over oil, military invasions of the West Coast; when the convulsion subsides, Americans will live in smaller places and eat locally grown food. Credit Kunstler with an energetic argument, but whether he has achieved his stated goal--waking up an ostensibly somnolent public--via his relentless and alarmist pessimism remains to be seen. You’ll love wallowing in it

If you are a "true believer" in relativism that believes in the current fads of global warming, anti-oil, "sustainability", over-population, etc.; believes that man's ingenuity cannot overcome obstacles; and believes the USA is an arrogant, slothful, racist and wasteful polluter with no redeeming traits that should die a slow death out of guilt for it sins of abusing finite hydrocarbons, then this read is for you. You’ll love wallowing in it. It is generally more a social commentary than a serious scholarly presentation.

The bottom line is that he admits not having any answers and unsure of the future himself. He really offers no solutions to his bleak outlook on life.

Anyone can choose a side and then go after supporting data and sources to support their viewpoint - as all pre-filtered editorial perspectives do. For this topic, I happen to understand both factual and conjectural sides of the issue (he does not) and could easily debate either perspective about planetary resources. He would have been better off doing the same in his book, presenting both sides for the reader to contemplate. I got thru roughly 50% of this book and stopped due to tedious redundancy of the same material which is essentially a constant negative (and selective) view of past history with a bleak unredemptive future replete with a thesaurus of hopeless words, concepts and writing structure. It appears as if the author imprints his self-admitted personal tragedies (including multi-generational divorces & isolation) with their attendant bitterness into his writings.

Similar to the author, 'am in his age bracket; originally born & raised in upstate NYS; a grad from the SUNY system. But unlike the author, have been involved intimately in the oil & gas industry, living in the South for years. As such I would say this man is immersed in ignorance (feigned or real) as well as acute depression - but refuses to treat either! He would celebrate the suicidal end of evil planet sucking mankind including his own.

A powerful look into the near future

I must admit that I was prepared for this treatise on our civilization's future by having already read some very good books and articles on the subject including Dr. Steve Leeb's masterpiece, "The Oil Factor", and "Game Over" and also the daily updates on my favorite energy-related web site, "The Oil Drum" [...]. So, in a way this review is from a member of the choir, not a neophyte that has come to this point of view via sudden epiphany.

That notwithstanding, I found the prose in this book quite enjoyable to read and at times, caused the hair on the back of my neck to stand straight up, due to the content. How is it that we let our endowment of oil, this cheap, easy-to-find and extract energy source, be squandered on something as unsustainable as the American urban and sub-urban lifestyles? Mr. Kunstler explains this foolishness in a series of chapters that exposes the cluster of memes that permeate our thinking and render us utterly powerless to stop or even slightly modify our wasteful behavior patterns. The memes of "There is plenty of easy-to-get-to cheap oil and it's just a matter of finding it" and "If we can get the tree-huggers to give up on ANWR, we will be in like Flynn" and my favorite, "Technology will save us with some new energy delivery system based on hydrogen, wind power, solar power, natural gas and if all else fails, nuclear power to propel us into the future!" are all part of the trance that we have entered as part of the constant over-supply of, among other things, mindless entertainment that distracts our attention while extracting dollars from our wallets, with very little in return to show for our time spent gazing at our televisions, movie screens and computer monitors.

Mr. Kunstler carefully decomposes each of these memes (and many more) to shows the likely consequences of what holding on to them will cost us.

Two other points: I needed to have a dictionary handy when reading this tome. Mr. Kunstler's writing vocabulary dwarfs my reading vocabulary! Also, I think that he is predominantly correct, but that his predictions will unfold much slower than he suggests in his book. New economies will spring forward and become widespread and cushion the shock when "Peak Oil" manifests for real. However, I am taking his description of the "dog days" (or should it be "dog years") of the Long Emergency at face value and preparing for them now. If it does not happen, I will be way ahead of the game in terms of detachment from the material aspects of life and more self-reliant as a consequence. If he's right, well, the same analysis applies.

speculative but still worth reading

By and large, this book rests upon two factual claims:

1. The world supply of oil and natural gas is starting to decline, and will continue to decline in coming decades.

2. No alternative technologies will bail out industrial civilization, because most other sources of energy cannot be created without prodigious amounts of oil and natural gas (which, if assumption (1) is correct, will not be around).

If assumptions (1) and (2) are correct, industrial civilization will disappear, and standards of living will decline around the world.

I have no way of knowing whether assumptions (1) and (2) are in fact correct; these seem to me to be technical issues that only scientists can have informed opinions upon.

But having said that, Kunstler does present an interesting case that (1) and (2) are at least possible. And he certainly presents a good case that if (1) and (2) come to pass, civilization will take a giant leap backwards. So I think this book is worth reading, even if one should not take it as gospel.

I do think it could have used a bit of editing in the second half; judging by the most negative reviews, many of Kunstler's comments therein about Wal-Mart, the South, etc. seem to have needlessly inflamed readers, and I found his discussion of "entropy" and the economy hard to follow in parts. But even if you skip the second half, the early chapters of this book are worth reading.
