About the Author

Jefferson Ingram began his academic career by teaching Constitutional History for the Department of History at the University of Dayton in the Spring of 1978 and entered a� full-time tenure track position in the Criminal Justice Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton in the Fall of 1978.� He continued to teach in the Department of History for two more semesters and offered courses in Criminal Procedure, The Law of Evidence, and Criminal Law until the late 1990's for the Criminal Justice Program.� During this time, he team taught a death penalty course, The Death Penalty, with a philosophy professor and offered a philosophy-criminal justice course jointly with a philosophy professor on The Moral Basis for Civil and Criminal Law.� In 1990, he taught a course for the School of Business Administration, Law for the Accounting Profession. In 1994, the Criminal Justice Program became the Criminal Justice Studies Program and the course on evidence was phased out with new duties added in the form of teaching a senior seminar course for all graduating Criminal Justice students.� In the Summer of 2003, Jefferson Ingram joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Dayton as a tenured faculty member, where he continues to teach and support students in the Criminal Justice Studies Program as needed.

During the twenty-nine years of teaching, Jefferson Ingram has published books on criminal procedure, Cases and Materials on Criminal Procedure , Copyright 1986, Anderson Publishing Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Criminal Procedure: Cases and Materials , Copyright 1995, Anderson Publishing Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, along with ancillary teaching manuals.� A third book on criminal procedure, Criminal Procedure, Theory and Practice, Copyright 2005, Pearson Education, Inc. Yes, it's a textbook alright.

This was kind of dry. I don't know, it's a textbook.

The one thing I didn't like was the lack of definitions of keywords in the text. Easily remedied by employing the use of Google searches, but still. It would have been helpful.

The Willink Switcharoo

Simply put, I believe this book will prove to be Jocko's greatest work. Allow me to explain its genius with a little story of my own.

This small, unassuming book is the literary equivalent of getting a child to take bad-tasting medicine by hiding it in chocolate pudding. The medicine (boring life lessons like discipline and hard work) is unconsciously consumed with each delicious spoonful of pudding (Way of the Warrior Kid). We pick up the story as the child is eating the last bites of pudding.

Dad reaches the spoon into the cup one last time, scraping the bottom, then feeding his son the last chocolatey spoonful.
"All done!", He exclaimed before sitting back to relish in the satisfaction of having successfully flanked his stubborn son into taking his medicine.
"But wait...", he thought, "My mouth tastes funny..."
He instinctively wiped the edges of his mouth, only to discover chocolate pudding on his fingertips.
"That's weird. I didn't take a single bite of that pudding."
Suddenly he sensed the presence of someone other than his son. As he turned his gaze, their eyes locked.
"J-j-j-j-jocko?!", he stuttered.
"Good Evening, Dad", grumbled a smirking Jocko Willink.
"How did you... What are you..."
"I am sorry, Dad. This was the only way for me to get YOU to take YOUR medicine."

Jocko went on to explain how he pulled off this elaborate con known in the SEAL Teams as The Willink Switcharoo. The objective of The Willink Switcharoo is for Jocko to implant an idea into someone's mind so stealthily that they believe they came up with it. With his target consumed with the execution of "their" idea, Jocko is able to slip in and administer the needed intervention to the unconscious target.

After realizing what happened, Dad was speechless. Jocko caused Dad to focus so much on giving the medicine to his son that he did not realize that a 230lb Navy Seal was giving him spoonfuls of the same, sweet medicine.

"Thanks", Dad said.
"You can thank me by getting after it", said Jocko.
Jocko then stood up, pulled a bag of Jocko White Tea from his pocket, placed it in between his cheek and gums like chewing tobacco, and BTF'd out the front door never to be seen again.

TL;DR Jocko hid valuable life lessons in a children's book, which will likely impact as many adults as it does children.

PARENTING MADE EASY!

My 9 year old son was so excited that he read the entire book in one day. He took it to school and showed all of his friends. His teachers want an "AR test" for the book so the kids can get extra credit for reading it. We have been following Jocko since day 1 and this is the perfect way to teach any kid how to become better. I have never seen him so motivated. He wakes up at 0434 with Jocko's wake up track downloaded on his iPod. He puts on his "TROOPER" rash guard (Adult S is a little loose on him but he will grow into it) and proceeds to GET AFTER IT in the garage! He eats only healthy food now (He refused pizza last night and drank a protein shake). He takes a shower and gets all his school "gear" squared away for the day. He studied for his science test that he had for the day. He was confused on one question and said "I'm going to ask the teacher as soon as I get to school because I don't understand it" Then he studied some more! Then he did extra pull ups. He read his bible for 10 minutes. He took the trash out. He woke up his brothers for school, using the exact words in Jocko's wakeup track.He planned his entire day out and realized he would not be home before Jiu-jitsu tonight. So he packed his Gi and put it in my truck so he will be good to go later! HE IS DOING ALL OF THIS ON HIS OWN! Oh, and all the other kids at school are asking a ton of questions, and he is teaching them too. This book did, IN ONE DAY, what I have been trying to teach him for 9 years! Thank you Jocko. Oh, and by the way, now his 7 and 12 year old brothers are reading the book. I have no doubt, the same result will occur.

My 6 year old daughter loved it!

I was going to write some inside joke review for the Jocko fans, like "this book with be like gasx for your kids brain." But after thinking about it, those who follow Jocko and Echo will love this, and they don't need a sell. It is right in line with the themes in the Jocko podcast and Extreme Ownership.

But I write his review for those who don't know anything about Jocko, or for those looking for a motivating read for their kids. I preordered this thinking that I might be able to reinforce with my 6 year old daughter some of the lessons we are already applying at home. When I first started the book, I had my doubts. Marc seemed really negative, and put himself down a bunch. It was not what I was expecting. I was more than surprised when my daughter kept making me read the next chapter ... and the next ... and the next.

We continued on, and she continued to want to get back to the book. She surprised me more when she began anticipating what Uncle Jake was going to teach Marc. The next day, she brought the book over to me, and asked that rather than watch TV, could we read more about Marc and Uncle Jake. I was floored - she only gets TV for two hours a week, and she highly values it. Now she was giving it up to read - something we do all the time, something she enjoys, but not something she will volunteer for.

We finished the book, she let out a big Hoo Yah - again, not something I have taught her. Upon finishing, she asked if we could read it again. I have had the book a week, and we have now gone through it almost twice. She refers back to the book. I even caught her making her bed yesterday - saying she needs to keep her room clean and organized. I'm not making this up, or trying to be funny. She is 6. She loves this book. She is pushing herself more after reading it.

Bought for a gift but I want it for me!!

Terrific yummy recipes for way more than the desserts you are expecting baking represent. Great photos for each recipe. Clear step by step directions. Bought this for my young nephew and as soon as I looked at it I knew I wanted to try some recipes myself. Another adult relative saw it before I got it wrapped and said "This looks perfect for me. I'm like I kid when it comes to my kitchen skills. Can I have it for my birthday too?" Looks like I'll be buying a few more copies, lol.

Bought this for my 3 year old nephew who loves to help his mom bake. He loves it!! I also got him a little chefs outfit to go along with it. The recipes are simple enough and have his favorite Sesame Street characters. I would definitely recommend as a gift for any budding chef.

Not especially preschool-friendly

This is a cute book, with lots of cheerful, colorful drawings of the Sesame Street characters. In that sense, it is appealing to preschoolers.
It also features spiral binding to allow the pages to lie flat, a nice feature on any cookbook.

All in all, though, I was disappointed.
The pages are very, very thin, and I don't think they will hold up well to being turned by little, less-coordinated fingers. They certainly won't hold up to any drips or spatters during cooking.

Also, not one, single recipe features pictures of any of the steps of the recipe. Photos are of the final product, and the steps are awfully complex for little ones. For example, step 3 of one recipe reads, "In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, ricotta cheese, yogurt, sugar, and cinnamon, With a wooden spoon, stir in the drained noodles and raisins. Spoon the mixture into the oiled baking dish." That's all one step.
While I imagine that this was done to limit each recipe to a few "easy" steps, that's a lot to process. With preschoolers, draining the noodles is a step. Stirring is a step. Spooning is a step, and so on.

I would have loved to have see the Sesame puppets used to model and teach safety tips and baking techniques that the littlest kids can manage, such as how to use a whisk, how to measure with a measuring cup, or how to spoon cookie dough onto a cookie sheet. Instead, there are only drawings of the characters with speech bubbles saying things like "Count the different noodles you see in your pantry." or "Most eggs have just one yolk inside, but every once in awhile, there are two. And that's no yoke!". Not terrible, but not as strong as it could be.

And, finally, I don't feel like the recipe selection is especially suited to preschool tastes. While I am not one of those people who limits a child's food choices to "kiddy foods" like chicken nuggets, my experience has been that - in the toddler and preschool years - all but the most adventurous eaters prefer simple recipes with limited ingredients.
If I'm making chicken piccata for the family, I know my littlest eater will probably prefer a plate with chicken, sauce on the side for dipping, noodles to the side, simple vegetables and so on, rather than everything mixed together. A plate of "sorted" vegetables is preferred over a tossed salad. If I were writing a baking book for toddlers and preschoolers, I might opt for simple flavors.

This book includes things like a carrot-raisin-pineapple cake with Greek yogurt and lemon rind frosting and a casserole with potatoes, kale, onion, eggs, cottage cheese, and tomatoes.

The recipes have (kind of dumb) kid-friendly names, like "Yummy Tummy Biscuits", but the recipes themselves aren't really written with most little kids in mind. They seem more suited to young chefs in the 7 -12 year range. With many recipes calling for 14 - 16 ingredients, these could be expensive experiments if it turns out your little one isn't buying into beets in the red velvet cupcakes or a baked baby spinach and goat cheese egg dish.

I purchased as a gift, but am returning the book because I just don't see it being very useful for families in the kitchen.
Although it doesn't have the appealing Sesame characters, I very much prefer the Early Sprouts Cookbook for healthy, kid-friendly recipes that children can enjoy preparing and won't balk at eating.

Norton is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Western Australia, the Director of the Centre for Acoustics, Dynamics and Vibration at that University, and a Foundation Director of SVT - Engineering Consultants.

Denis G. Karczub is Principal Engineer at SVT - Engineering Consultants. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Western Australia, graduating with honours in 1991, and going on to obtain his PhD in 1997.

Best of the Bunch

I've collected a large number of books on noise and vibrations as I've had to learn this subject and then teach it to others, and as far as I'm concerned this is the best of the bunch. It is well organized with chapters on mechanical vibrations, sound waves, interaction of sound and vibration, measurement and control of noise, signal processing, statistical energy analysis and pipe flow noise. It starts from fundamental principles, but moves quickly to applications with an excellent balance between theory and practice. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the interaction of sound and vibration, whether they're a student or a practicing professional.
