Douglas Connelly (MDiv and MTh, Grace Theological Seminary) is senior pastor at Davison Missionary Church near Flint, Michigan, after serving twelve years as senior pastor at Parkside Community Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. A writer and speaker, he has written seventeen LifeGuide Bible Studies as well as several books, including The Bible for Blockheads and Angels Around Us. He and his wife Karen have three adult children and six grandchildren.

A worthwhile personal or group study resource.

I have a shelf full of small group bible studies. Some of them I have used with small groups. Many of them I have used to guide my bible study time. Still others have provided guidance and seeds for thought in developing a sermon series. Of all of the different studies, the largest collection of Bible studies comes from IVP, and of those studies that IVP puts out, the Lifeguide series takes up the most room. I like them because they are simple and straightforward for both personal and group study. I often supplement what is in the book with personal research, but the Lifeguide studies do a good job at guiding people through the topic at hand to be studied.

The Twelve Disciples discusses, if you have not guessed, Jesus' inner circle of followers that are often referred to as the apostles or the disciples. The author does 9 individual studies, and then groups three of the more obscure disciples in one lesson at the end of the series. What I like about the way the study unfolds is that it really focuses in on one Scripture or one event that is central to understanding that particular disciple, their unique gifts and abilities, as well as the struggles that they may have had to deal with. By the time you are done with the study, you will feel like you really know at least 9 of the disciples in a deeper way. In the process, you will also learn baby steps that you might need to take to be stronger in your discipleship journey by learning from the first apostles.

Interesting Bible Study

Part of the LifeGuide Bible Studies series from InterVarsity Press, THE TWELVE DISCIPLES is a ten lesson Bible study guide that examines the lives of Jesus' first twelve apostles. Nine of these are given there are lesson, while the remaining three or covered in the final lesson. Each lesson begins with a detailed passage of scripture. This is followed by a short essay and is followed by a series of group questions. The lesson concludes with a brief section entitled "Now or Later" that provides some more information about the disciple(s) discussed. The very end of the book includes leader's notes that provide more information for leaders of a group. Personally, I'm often fascinated by the lives of the disciples and really enjoyed working through this study; I learned some things about each of the original twelve apostles that I did not know before.

Heal the Soil to Reverse Global Warming

I haven't met a soil scientist that I didn't like. They are always quirky, hopeful, and passionate about what they study. It's probably that childlike connection to playing in the dirt... and the realization that is plays such a significant role in life. Although Ohlson is not a soil scientist, she is not stranger to digging deep into topics.

I knew that this would be a good book to read when I picked it up, and as I read on, my conviction was supported. It is a quick read that will reach a mainstream audience, beyond those familiar with Ruth Stout (Gardening Without Work) and William Bryant Logan (Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth).

If you are looking to learn about "new" carbon sequestering techniques, this book is a great introduction to composting, cover crops, no-till farming, and other very modern agro-ecological science. You'll be fascinated to learn how Gabe Brown of North Dakota (who I saw present at the 2012 Quivira Conference!) created 4-feet deep topsoil over his land by going back to the basics!

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO ACCEPTS THE FACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Gardening magazines have told the same story for decades: someone buys a piece of land that is mostly sand or
gravel, and then the gardener brings it back to life by mixing in manure, compost and cover crops. And one day,
the worms appear, a signal that the soil has become a rich and fertile, water-retaining, bed of nourishment for
healthy and robust crops, whether flowers or food.

On our own small plots of land, this is an act of healing and renewal. And Kristin Ohlson's book tells the
same story, that the vast expanses of grassland exploited for centuries, and now turned or turning into desert, can also
be healed and renewed the same way. But to accept the stories of the heroes she shares, is a monumental paradigm shift.
We have to let go of the entrenched thinking that humans know best and return to a partnership with nature.

A central figure in this book is Allan Savory, who understood decades ago that grasslands do not renew themselves, but that
the fertility that was so prized by pioneers was the result of the massive migrations of the buffalo, who crossed the prairies,
stirring and fertilizing the earth where they grazed, and then moving on. Hot sun and low rainfall in the dry seasons did not
matter, because the earth had become a big sponge, retaining water through drought, renewing the water table, able to sustain life.

Ohlson provides a great introduction to Savory's work, which has now become a practice amongst enlightened farmers
and ranchers around the globe. I knew about Savory, but I did not know of the other heroes--soil scientists and farmers
who have been also walking a similar path.

How will the soil save us? Ohlson's book explains why healing the soil is the number one way to sequester carbon and remove it
from our atmosphere.

Monsanto claims to hold the key to survival in the years to come, but its science could not be more wrong. Read this book and
find out why healing the soil is the only true choice for the future, because by healing the soil, there is the greatest chance that
we can reverse climate change in our children's lifetimes.

As a member of a local environmental committee, I look at the world around me differently, moreso after reading this book

As a member of a small community environmental group, I found this book so very helpful in bringing others into the loop of caring for my community, which is where it starts, and helping to branch their enthusiasm for the earth's health beyond the gates of just my neighborhood. Kristin shows how it is never too late to begin to care about the integrity of our land, and gives perspective to the fact that the land has been there for us, even when we neglected it. We must consider the actions our neglect will have on our own future, and the time to do it is now.

What a way...

to keep us guessing! I think I have it all figured out, then incidents in the story change my mind...and a repeat of that happens over and over. Never a dull moment in this exciting tale of crime and passion! A lot more depth given to the story and it's characters. Grady and Lara have a web of emotions to untangle! Can't wait to read "Perfect for Us!"

About the Author

David Julian McClements is a professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts. He specializes in the areas of food biopolymers and colloids, particularly the development of food-based structured delivery systems for bioactive components. Dr. McClements received his Ph.D. in Food Science (1989) from the University of Leeds. He then did post-doctoral research at the University of Leeds, University of California, Davis, and University College Cork. His research has been funded by grants from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the food industry. He is a member of the editorial boards of a number of journals, and has organized workshops, symposia, and conferences in the fields of food colloids, food emulsions, and delivery systems.
