This book is awesome! My daughter is an average reader- she reads what she's required to for school without too much of a battle. We purchased this book at her schools book fair because she loves all things Paris. I keep telling her "when you really enjoy a book, you won't want to stop reading it". Well she is HOOKED! She can't put this book down! Thank you for making my 4th grader a book lover!

do you feel that something is "just not right"?

I think aggression and manipulation is an "open secret" in our society, and an individual can lead a much more successful life if they have the mental tools to intelligently evaluate and take action against such behavior. "In Sheep's Clothing" could help a reader who is being manipulated and used take necessary steps to deal with a potentially ambiguous situation. If you are beginning to feel that there is something wrong in your relationship (with a relative, significant other, or boss) and that it is not YOU who is crazy, this book might be a good place to start. This would also be a helpful book for a young person entering the workplace or the world of dating to read. I think many of us go out into the world not realizing that we will encounter many people who are sizing us up as potential victims. Those of us who have not already learned to look for covert aggression in people we would hope to find trustworthy (lovers, teachers, therapists, supervisors) might be put on the alert by this book, since these users rely on the victim's and witnesses' denial of what the aggressor are actually doing. The section I found most interesting is the one entitled "Recognizing the Tactics of Manipulation and Control". I think this section is really the heart of the book because the reader can identify the concrete behaviors being used against him and see them for what they are: weapons and tactics of an aggressor. On the downside, I think this book could benefit from a more extensive section on personality disorders. A person who is in a close relationship with a borderline or narcissistic personality disordered abuser would be likely to read this book in the early stages of feeling like something is wrong in their relationship, since manipulation is a major part of the pathology. For someone in this situation, it would be really helpful to be told the characteristics of these disorders so they can more effectively "know their enemy".

Barely scratches the surface

In this small book the author presents through several stories examples through which people may manipulate each other in family and business environments, and then through the tips in the last chapter offers suggestions for dealing with different scenarios. Personally, I liked that "how to" chapter of 22 pages with practical tips the best.

The most useful skills one can develop for dealing with manipulative people seem to be learning to set boundaries and becoming assertive and in that regard other books deal with these topics at much greater length, and I consider them more useful than this book.

Some of the tips for dealing with manipulative people this author suggests are:

- Accept no excuses
- Judge actions, not intentions
- Set personal limits
- Make direct requests
- Accept only direct responses
- Stay focused in the here and now
- When confronting aggressive behavior, keep the weight of responsibility on the aggressor
- When you confront, avoid sarcasm, hostility, and put-downs
- Avoid making threats
- Take action quickly
- Speak for yourself
- Make reasonable agreements
- Be prepared for consequences
- Be honest with yourself

Too much time describing, more time needed advising

Overall, this book IS a good read. It describes the nasty people out there to a tee. But this book suffers from the same problem most other personality-disorder-type books have: the author spends 99% of the pages describing problematic individuals and only 1% advising how to deal with them. I might be completely wrong here, but I think most of us buy these types of books because we want to learn how to deal with people that frustrate us. For the most part, this is just another book telling us that yes, horrible people are indeed out there, and the author goes on page after page coming back to this central point. With the exception of a few pages, how you deal with these people is for you to figure out for yourself (despite the title of the book).

The gist of this book is that once you are aware that somebody is manipulative, that in itself should be comforting and that is how the author defines "dealing with" a manipulative person. Maybe I'm alone on this, but simply knowing that somebody has control issues while they are making a scene in front of me is not the least bit comforting.

You'll see this in other reviews as well, but there are some oddities to the book. Once you get past the typos and spacing quirks, you'll notice the author repeatedly states how other therapists and conventional psychology are all wrong and how - lucky for us - he came along with the "right" psychological descriptions of why terrible people are the way they are. This "yay for me" attitude is peppered throughout the book, ironically, and is distracting indeed, but not enough to be a purchasing deal breaker, I don't think.

I think I could have given this book more stars if I had read it first, but I just finished reading, "Nasty People" by Jay Carter and THAT is a five star book. Jay is a humble, educated guy who basically says, "Ok, here are the jerks out there and here's what ya gotta do." Although Jay still spends the majority of the book simply describing bad people, he does offer practical advice on how to deal with them, and gives word-for-word examples of what to say, and some body language examples you can use.

All in all, I guess you can't read too many books about people you don't want to be around so this book is worth the read.

Gr 3-7–An absorbing story based on the shark attacks in New Jersey in 1916. Chet Roscoe, 10, moves in with his uncle while his father looks for work in California. He works in his uncle's diner and meets some local boys with whom he becomes friends. A story hits the papers about a shark attack about 10 miles away and their little town dismisses it as a fake, but a local fisherman begs to differ. The boys play a series of pranks on one another, but when Chet comes face to face with the shark in the river, the friends refuse to believe him, until they see it themselves. Black-and-white illustrations that resemble old photographs enhance the events of the story. Tarshis incorporates information about the real attacks and fictionalizes it, then follows the story with facts about the attacks and sharks. There couldn't be a shark in the creek. That was crazy.

Chet tried to laugh, but T.J. was still standing there with that terrified look on his face. And now Dewey was rushing through the water towards the grass.

"Get out of the water!" he yelled.

Because that black triangle was coming right at them. Chet swam as fast as he could, but T.J. just stood there, frozen.

"T.J.!" Chet shouted. "Hurry!"

But it was too late.

The shark was heading right for T.J.

T.J. screamed.

There was a huge splash.

And then he was gone.

All my I SURVIVED books look worn, which is a good thing!

I am a 4th grade teacher and I cannot keep the I Survived books in my classroom library neat. The boys read them and constantly fight over them. The Shark Attacks of 1916 was no different- it already looks worn. I love when I find books that students actually read, and am thrilled that the boys found a series they love sooo much. I also like how they teach history, seem to have some great character lessons, and are high interest! I would buy any book from this series because the book will actually be read and enjoyed.

This book got my 9yr old son to read!!

We have struggled getting my 9yr old son to read over the past couple of years. He just wasn't interested and it has been a struggle. He stumbled accross the I survived series and he doesn't want to put the book down. I think he finds the story exciting, and relates to the characters. He loves talking about it after he's done reaading. This is a mother's dream! I only wish there were more books in the series!

Great book!

I bought this book through Amazon when I saw an elementary boy reading it. I really like the book! It's fast and easy to read, and based on (and includes) real happenings. There are two more books in the series, too, which I am also getting: "I survived the sinking of the Titanic," and "I survived Hurricane Katrina."

In this book Chet is living with his uncle in a new town, and going to a new school. He feels alone and unloved. He starts to feel accepted by a group of boys until they play a prank on him. That really hurts, but his uncle tells him that that is the way of boys: They play a prank on you, so now you play one back on them to show you're ready to be friends! Chet does, but it backfires; they can't handle it and stop playing with him.

Frustrated, Chet goes to their swimming hole to clean it up. Then he sees (and is almost grabbed) by a shark. However, no one believes him when he goes running into town--except one old captain. The formerly friendly boys joke about it, even "tempting" the shark--which they don't believe is real--by jumping in the creek. But...then guess who comes along, and guess who rescues the boys!

The pictures in this book are absolutely well-drawn as well.

When Hello Means Goodbye

I recieved this book while in the hospitol after delivering our stillborn son. I read this book over and over. It was a great help to me in the days shortly after I went home. It is a great comfort to know others cared enough about future parents that they could give so much of themselves to write a book about something so personal....after 7 years I share this book with others that I come into contact with that have experienced a loss. This book is a must for parents to have in a time when nothing makes sense.

A comfort when nothing else could...

Since our daughter was stillborn 7 weeks ago I have read just about every book I could find on perinatal loss. This one was sent to me by the nurse reviewing my hospital stay for my insurance company and it was the best. I found it very comforting and insightful and I've read it several times. It was short and easy to focus on in spite of the shock I was experiencing. I liked it because it dealt specifically with late pregnancy losses and the associated shock, grief, and heartbreak. It is a good gift for someone who is experiencing this catastrophe.

I could not have made it without this book

When my son, Dylan, was stillborn my sister-in-law gave me the book "When Hello Means Goodbye" I must have read it 100 times. It helped me to deal with a pain that no one I knew at the time could possible understand. It is in a box with the momentos I have of my sons short life and will always be cherished.
