Very Usable Lessons that Form a Solid Foundation

RICHNESS OF CONTENT
Just about every application you can think of for guitar is in here, from riffs, arpeggios, scales, chords, technique (e.g., vibrato, slides, etc.), finger picking, hammer-ons and pull-offs, tapping, the CAGED system, sweep picking, popular alternate tunings, Blues and Rock progressions, string skipping, pivoting, developing call and response, basics of song composition and construction, chordal soloing, and the list goes on. It should be noted that this is a three book set integrated under one title: Level 1 being for beginners, Level 2 intermediate and Level 3 advanced.
Once registered on the Rock House Method site, you have access to a digital Ebook version and audio downloads – as well as free membership for online lesson support (in fact, I had an issue finding something on the site and within minutes John McCarthy, the author and developer of the lesson concepts, responded directly with a link and a “hello!”).
STYLE
Regardless of the level, McCarthy does a fine job progressing ideas, from simple to (more) complex, but also back-tracks to a previous Level and within the same level. In other words he will ask you to ‘recall’ a previous lesson on a particular scale (for example), and then develop the idea about that scale further. This makes it ideal to prevent boredom of working on one particular aspect of music theory or practice for too long, but also tests your practice dedication to retrieve past lessons.
The development of lesson complexity is very well done, which clearly demonstrates McCarthy’s planning and strategy behind the Rock House Method. It is no accident that a person starts off with single-string riffs and builds up to hybrid picking of Baroque and Classical (Bach and Beethoven) pieces, as well as arpeggio progressions.
As important, the book presents very simple and ‘quick’ lessons so that you can learn something immediately and understand it quickly – particularly useful if you can only spare 20-minutes a day.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
McCarthy does not try to dazzle with fretboard gymnastics, but offers solid, useable applications that will get a beginner playing right away and improve technique in the advanced guitarist. The riffs and lead licks are cool, which helps you to sound cool very quickly; and that certainly encourages learning with the beginner and intermediate.
I’ve seen several books on the market that have titles similar to “The Complete Guitar Book,” but often they provide lessons that have you learn “Ol’ Suzanna” or they spend too much time on over-simplistic lessons that guitarists either would not use or may not use in the context provided. Rock House Method covers an immense amount of material and, therefore, dabbles a little in everything so that you can get your feet wet and then pursue the concepts further if you wish and within your own improvisation and composition development.
This is a ‘solid’ learning resource, although an advanced guitarist would be best to look into the individual Level 3 Rock House Method book, as opposed to buying this expanded version (nonetheless, there are some fun lessons in both the beginner and intermediate levels that serve as a reminder, e.g., “oh, yah, I remember that style riff and progression!”
