Admitedly, this is not day-to-day life in New Guinea....this is fully adorned, fully committed, fully made-up for special occasions, pedal-to-the-metal New Guinea, and the effect is viusually stunning. This is quintessential MAN AS ART (See Also : Man as Art (A Studio Book) In my opinion, The Last Men is significantly superior in capturing the awesome majesty of New Guinea Ceremonies than the book actually entitled "New Guinea Ceremonies". The photography is incredible! Photos are large, colorful and glossy and of excellent composition.
Being honest, I haven't read the text fully and can't comment on the quality or veracity of the author's observations, but the pictures alone make this a must-have book.

'The Tariff Question in the Gilded Age: The Great Debate of 1888' by Joanne Reitano argues a compelling thesis - that the lowering of tarrifs enables domestic manufacturers to seek out foreign labor and resources and ship finished product back, undercutting domestic manufacturers. A geopolitical problem arises as those countries with the lowest labor and resource costs are precisely those with the greatest socio-political instability, and when the organic fertilizer hits the ventillation device the 'offshore' manufacturer will demand that the US government intervene militarily to defend 'American interests'. The author presents several historical examples.
Reitano's thesis found support not only in the Gilded Age, but a century earlier by the Scottish Empiricist Adam Smith in his 'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,' wherein Smith wrote, "By preferring the support of domestick [sic] to that of foreign industry, he [the consumer] intends only his own security; and by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, he intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention." This is Smith's only mention of an 'invisible hand' - a term now twisted to mean whatever a sophist wishes, but was originally intended to explain and justify what's now considered xenophobic isolationist protectionism.
It has for some years been popular to promote the 'liberalizing' effect of international trade, yet historical evidence shows this largely to be a myth. One may cite the numerous European examples with whom the US has been a trade partner for hundreds of years, yet the entire planet has moved economically and politically toward illiberalism (a politically correct term for fascism?) and Marxism, not toward laissez-faire capitalism. Although the argument for international trade appears logical on its surface, evidence that trade has the liberalizing effect claimed is lacking, especially since trade has the potential for use as a weapon.

The Award was established for the best book-length publication in educational research and development. To be considered for the Award, a book must be concerned with the improvement of the educational process through research or scholarly inquiry and must have a research base. The author or another scholar may nominate a book as specified in the Educational Researcher journal received by all AERA members. Committee Chair, P. An Ethnographic Equation: The Politics of Caring/Schooling

Dr. Valenzuela's research compels me to continue my work in critical theory and ethnography. SUBTRACTIVE SCHOOLING contributes to the dialogue on the education and schooling of U.S.-Mexican youth. Moreover, the study can extend to the schooling and education of Latinas and Latinos in the United States. Our schooling demands struggle for survival both within and beyond the classroom/school setting, especially when the curriculum is lifeless and irrelevant to students' immediate reality.
Clearly, Dr. Valenzuela spent time with the students and school culture at Seguin High, documenting the push and pound urban students encounter to succeed. Researchers in education rarely document the daily struggles of U.S.-Mexican high school students, but Dr. Valenzuela succeeds in presenting their story, their plight, their journey, their turmoil against uncaring bureaucracies. She does this with respect for the students' voices and naming of their schooling experiences as expressed through critical research and an insightful ethnographic equation. Dr. Valenzuela's research reminds educators, learners, and researchers that they must reconsider their politics and practices of caring when working with young students and thinkers of Mexican origin.

The problem with education

Valenzuela presents us with a study of both U.S. born and Mexican born students within American public schools. She is sincere, honest, and thorough. She studies teacher-student dynamics, and how many students are given the impression that teachers do not care how they fare in school. She also studies rifts between U.S. born and Mexican born students and the effect it has on both groups. She also brings up a very important issue about Mexican students who refuse to excel academically. She is the first person I've read who accurately labels this as "passive resistance". This is VERY IMPORTANT, because a lot of people have misconceptions about why many of us Mexicans do not perform well in school.
She uses student quotes and classroom observations to illustrate what these students are feeling and experiencing. It's obvious that the students trusted and respected her, and that she felt the same about them. Valenzuela does an excellent job here and I think all teachers should read this to get a better understanding of their students.

Very readable, as well

From the other reviews, you know her book won an award and what it's about, so let me also say in case you're debating about buying it that it's written in a very readable style. I feel it's more interesting (or easier to keep going in) than a lot of sociology books that get tiring after a while. She has plenty of interestingly written snapshots of conversations and details of life in the school, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that she tended to give us the student responses in both Spanish and English. I learned a lot of cool nuances in the language that way!

Great read!

Yep, this is the classic book that Matt Damon's Jason Bourne film franchise is loosely based on.
This series is a must read if you like spy stories. I read all 3 in the original trilogy back in the '80's & just re-read this book again. - Funny how far technology has progressed.
Believe it or not, back in the day, the primitive technology described in this book was cutting edge technology!
Love the books, love the film franchise.. But they are different from one another.

Great message behind this action and adventure movie

It is a good action and adventure movie. It shows the risks and the dangers Bourne was willing to take in search of his identity. All his gifts and abilities, and all his money, could not make up for his need to know WHO HE IS.

The application of the movie to our life is remarkable. It reminds me how empty and meaningless my life used to be before I found my identity in Christ. That's when I truly found myself. Until then, in spite of all my accomplishments, I had no idea where I came from (spiritually speaking) and where I was going. Just existing is not enough. We all need to know who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. What is the purpose of our life? Purpose gives meaning. The higher the purpose, the more meaningful our life is. Money, power, and people cannot fill the void in human life - the void of knowing who we are.

Bourne was willing to go to extreme, not only to find who he really was, but also to free himself from the slavery of those who were using him as a killing machine, and to choose his own destiny and purpose in life.

His companion, Marie, brings out the beautiful human side of Bourne. In order to protect her, he sends her away and gives her all his money. At the end of the movie, he looks for her and finds her running a successful business in a beautiful, paradise like resort area, by the sea. Their happy reunion is expressed with a beautiful embrace.

Jason is Bourne

The book is so much more involved in developing the plot than the movie. Ludlam is a master at developing characters. This is the first book of the series I've read, but seen all the movies. I'll be downloading all the books now. You're on a back and forth roller coaster whether Bourne is a good guy or a bad guy. The name Bourne is so appropriate and ironic as the story develops.
