Lavish Production, Content Wanting

The Empire of the Petal Throne is a curse to game companies. It seems that every one that tries to bring an EPT/Tekumel RPG to market suffers by it. TSR almost went broke selling the original by some accounts. Gamescience only ever published two of the three parts it intended to before letting the idea (and the license) drop. I've not seen the TOME version but TOME no longer exists. And now, neither do Guardians of Order, the publishers of this rather nice book.

This time around the system used to create player characters is a variant of the Tristat System first seen (I believe) in Big Eyes, Small Mouth, an anime RPG. The system is a points-driven thing similar in nature to that used in GURPS and Savage Worlds, with players allocating disadvantages to gain more build points if they want. I found it a rather cumbersome system to make characters with, but I am assured by people who are more versed in Tristat mechanics that once familiar with the build process it is much quicker and straightforward.

This would echo my experience with just about every other game system I've tried since White Box D&D.

The combat system can be quite detailed (read: complex) but once everyone has a couple of fights under their belt I guess it should sort itself out nicely. It looks to be about the same complexity as D20 Conan, maybe a bit more so. I am of course talking about fights using the combat maneuvers, not simple swing, hit, damage fighting.

Lets talk about the book.

This hardback is about the same size as the old 3.5 ed D&D books, printed in black and white on semi-gloss paper. The binding is strong and should last years in normal use. There's a map, a rather nice full color one, mounted to the back cover, which depicts the world of Tekumel. The map does not feature a hex grid, and only covers about half the world as depicted in the Swords and Glory maps. It is enough to game in though, probably for years. Tita's House of Games used to stock replicas of the S&G maps for those who want more.

The contents are split between the character generation process, a gazeteer of life in Tsolyanu and the surrounding nations, a history timeline and a small bestiary missing some of the lesser (but prominent) races/animals from earlier versions. If I had to guess I'd say that this was intended as the first in an extensive library of Tekumel source books, since the bestiary is light and the gazeteer is brief in places. I can envision the books that might have followed "Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne" into print had Guardians of Order not gone to the wall in the financial crises of the oughties.

In my opinion a new-to-EPT GM could run games set on Tekumel from this book with no problems, but the more experienced GM will find him-or herself sourcing stuff from his/her other versions in order to fill out the world. I'll own to being a might disappointed at what wasn't between the covers of this book, even more so now that the chance of ever seeing that library I speculated about have sunk south of "nil", but of course more content means higher price and Tekumel is a niche within an niche to start with.

With the sad passing of professor Barker it is anyone's guess whether any more versions of EPT will be made, or whether a license to reprint will ever be granted. Which is a pity because there are darn few settings as richly detailed as Tekumel, which has a canon stretching back more than 40 years and a unity of vision not seen in more modern products.

Of all the Tekumel products made, I think this one is probably the one a modern gamer would want to play, and the book is a fine thing in and of itself. Whether it is worth the price some are asking for it only you can say. A new copy used to sell for something around $40 in its day.

For my part, I'm thinking that I may very well do a personal port of the original EPT combined with the newer thoughts in this book to another system entirely and try and scare up a few players. Neither old-school D&D not Tristat fire the imaginations of the people I game with unfortunately.

Anything to get interest in the world of Tekumel going again.

Tekumel; Empire of The Petal Throne is its own kind of game system, and campaign setting (based on Egyptian, Moghul India, and Aztec cultures). It has several books based off it (written by M.A.R. Barker), and there are lots of cool (but not necessary for enjoyment) accessory books. In all, TEP ( abbreviation for Tekumel; Empire of The Petal Throne) is probably one of the coolest nonstandard roleplaying games I have ever played; it only requires two kinds of dice!

Love how Wendy Alec paints pictures with words in her writing! I read "The Fall of Lucifer" and was absolutely enthralled by her style. As a captive audience I just couldn't put the book down. So captivated was I by her writing artistry that I moved through her other 3 books of the Chronicles of Brothers with great ease -- reading them non-stop.
I gave my friend the Spanish version of the Chronicles of Brothers as a birthday present. She is now relishing every page of Alec’s 3rd book, "El hijo de la perdici�n." We often have intellectual and biblical "platicas" on them. We like Wendy Alec’s approach on how she takes the reader into seeing the angelic brothers’ saga through different biblical and secular lens. Now, I am waiting for the next two final books of the Chronicles of Brothers. Do you know when will they be coming out?
Suggestion: On the Kindle reading on the Chronicles of Brothers - it would be nice if the list of characters would be included on each Kindle book. My friend shared that it was somewhat cumbersome for her at times to follow the thread due to so many characters involved.

Fast read

I loved this book and read it quickly. It infuses scripture, and biblical stories with 'modern' interpretations. There are many suggestions for living our daily lives according to what Christ commissioned his disciples to do. Highly recommended if you want to make the world a better place by making small changes in your interactions with those that were created in God's image.

Very Good Read & Very, Very, Very Thouht Provoking

Max Lucado's Out Live Your Life is a very thought provoking book making you look at how you think about and treat others, especially those who are less fortunate, disabled, handicapped, etc.... As I read I found myself taking a good hard look at myself, my thoughts about others and their position in society and their circumstances. But what to do with it was a question I did not know what to do with. As I read further, Max gave the answer for me. Lucado shows us that we can not change ourselves without the help of God. And, he shows you that we as individuals can not help everyone, but when we as human beings come together we can accomplish a whole lot more. We all have gifts, talents, abilities, and resources that vary greatly. We need to learn how to come together and use all we are and have as individuals to help each other help others. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Pastors it is a great Bible Study.

Charles wrote The Senior Cohousing Handbook and, together with Kathryn McCamant, has designed over fifty cohousing communities in the United States and consulted on many more around the world.

Kathryn McCamant, and her husband Charles Durrett co-authored Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves and founded McCamant & Durrett Architects and The CoHousing Company. They coined the term "cohousing" for which they are credited in the Oxford English Dictionary. Kathryn has designed and developed dozens of cohousing communities and founded Cohousing Partners in 2006 with developer Jim Leach.

Creating Cohousing is THE book to read about cohousing

The new book by Katie McCamant & Chuck Durrett is a must-have book for anyone interested in cohousing or sustainable communities. Richly illustrated and well-written, it provides a wealth of information. A big thank you to Katie and Chuck for updating their classic book!

Interested in cohousing? This is a must-read!

This book was written by one of the giants in the cohousing field, Chuck Durrett, an architect who early on brought cohousing to the States from Denmark. His book is full of wonderful case studies and examples -- and I wished for a few examples of work by other skilled architects. The book is full of experiential wisdom; he's been there, lived cohousing as well as sold it, and knows whereof he speaks. Why I didn't give it a five-star rating: because I wanted some more practical information on costs, legal structures and issues, and so on. Perhaps that would have been more specific and limited in its application that he wished, and I'd certainly agree with that. Bottom line: if you think you might want to pursue cohousing, this book is an absolute must-read.

A MUST READ IF YOU ARE TIRED OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS!!!

Wow, this book is a real eye opener! I was diagnosed with FMS (fibromyalgia) and have a lot of fatigue because of it. I also found out in 2012 that I was suffering from mold exposure which would explain the symptoms of FMS. So I've been getting treated for the mold, but this book has shed light that some of my symptoms are probably due to a copper/zinc imbalance which the book explains. I would recommend reading this rather than googling it and researching it on your own; she's done the work! I found that even with the treatment I'm getting, that I am still fatigued and so are some of the other folks that are in my shoes.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired or fatigued. It is an easy book to read and not too long. It has great information from drs and other experts and many testimonials. There is info on how to know if you have too much copper and how to reverse it. Great book!!!

About the Author
S. Jason Cunningham has spent the last 12 years working extensively in Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and North and East Africa specializing in conflict resolution, geopolitical research and investigations, and corporate risk management and due diligence in such countries as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Libya, Uganda, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The author's career began some 19 years ago working on a diplomatic dialogue in support of the Middle East Peace Process, and has since travelled the world visiting more than 60 countries. The author has hosted high level diplomatic meetings with Presidents, Prime Ministers and leaders of multinational corporations, and frequently speaks at international conferences on homeland security, and oil and gas.

Intriguing

Just finished reading this book and must say it is a fun read. It is conspiracy theory writ large. Although I will not make a claim as to the veracity of all of the data presented, the unfolding arguments appeal to what many of us feel in our guts must be going on among the financial elites. Each chapter includes numerous references many of which are obscure or dated, however that very aspect will appeal to hardcore conspiracy theorists as proof that a sinester plot is being actively covered up.

The book includes many accusations of Satanism which are a bit overdone, but I do not doubt that international elites are intentionally shaping world events or that the powerful pick their successors from a select group, usually from the same families. As someone who, like the author, has spent the past 25 years working around the globe, I have seen the alleged interference and twisting of media coverage firsthand. If the author seems a bit paranoid or to be pushing his own religion (as it appears he is doing toward the end of the book), his indictment of select elites and their families' plotting throughout history is believable and the limited facts that I am certain of are accurate.

Having been raised Christian and having studied the world's major religions myself, to include continuing to have regular intimate exposure to Islam and Judaism, there is also no doubt in my mind that religion, particularly the Abrahamic religions, have been intentionally corrupted for political and financial gain. That is not to say that all of the devout are corrupt, only that many of the teachings have been twisted to benefit the powerful. This seems particularly true of many of the most far-fetched claims and restrictions. This book is also not the first time I have seen it postulated that Jesus Christ was influenced by exposure to Eastern philosophy during the 'missing years'.

There are definitely some people I would not recommend this book to - friends and relatives who are already paranoid conspiracy theorists - because it might push them over the top. But for the average reader, particularly those prone to sticking their heads in the sand and pretending society runs on peace, love, and understanding alone, I would strongly recommend "Smoke and Mirrors". Money brings power, power corrupts, and there is more happening in the world to benefit the few than most would like to believe. This book introduces unintitated readers to some of it.

Technically I tripped on various typos as if the book were hurriedly edited, but that seems to be increasingly common. It did not prove excessively distracting.

Someone involved with the book recommended it to me and I'm glad I read it. As stated before, overall it was fun to read and thought-provoking.

I purchased this book from amazon for use with the kindle reader app. My only complaint is that, while amazon sells it for the reader app, it can be downloaded for free in pdf format directly from the book's site. I don't mind paying $5.95 for the convenience of the kindle version, I just wish I had known about the free pdf version from the start.

Smoke and Mirrors is a book I would recommend to anyone around the world. I recently sent several books to friends and family who live overseas and gave several books for Christmas to friends here who heard about this book. I couldn't believe that the corrupt secret groups and elite who want us to live in a cloud of smoke think that they can keep a veil over our eyes for long. With this book, the truth is documented and will clearly help our world from anymore lies and deceipt. One story that woke me up was how the Federal Reserve is a privately-held company that lends to the US government but gets all the interest and not the people of the US. And, this private company is owned by a few corporations both here and abroad. I found the clarity of the historical details and the way the author describes the references and people behind many of the facts to be eduational and enlightening. This book should be mandatory in all universities. You will be shocked to find out the truth about the Libyan attack, the misleading TV news, the people who control all the gold in the world, and so much more. The perfect ending to Smoke and Mirrors; A New Beginning.

Good-to-Know

Courageous reporting! Good information to have...though sometimes keeping up with the complex, tangled events was challenging. I was surprised at how much info was in such a short book. Also, it was shocking to learn about the power that central bankers, religious hierarchies, the "military-industrial complex," and governments have had over us ordinary tax payers. What makes me so angry is that much of this is probably accurate, though it would be nice if it weren't. I can only hope that moving torward "Light," as the author talks about, truly illumines "Darkness."

A very critical perception of Reagan

I have used other works by Schaller in classes I have taught and I had hoped to use this book for a class on contemporary America. However, after reading it I have decided not to use it because of its lack of ideological balance. This is particularly evident in his unbalanced depiction of Reagan. Schaller regularly casts Reagan in a very negative light while the author also describes his opponents in a much more favorable manner (p.57, 75). When the Reagan administration did have a favorable policy outcome, such as the improved economic situation in 1983-84, Schaller describes it as luck (p.54). While the sections on the rise of the political right were insightful, his apparent predisposition against Reagan limits the value of this work.
