Unique book

This is not one more book, but the foundation of a theory not yet understood and much more not yet accepted. It opens new frontiers in biology and life sciences. The role of electromagnetism is vital to the concept of life. Each cell should not be considered and studied as one unit, but as part of one organism (my though is that maybe the one organism should be considered as part of one ecosystem). If you are trying to answer how external electromagnetic fields can affect a living organism, then you will find unique the idea that field intensity is not the criterion. Weak fields can be more important than strong fields.
Anyway, this book is classical and rare. It revolutionizes life sciences, enters unexplored regions. If you are a true scientist take it, if you can find it.

Meaty Survey and Suggestions for Frurther Research

This book is an excellent monograph that discusses the role of the electromagnetic fields and waves in the phenomena of Life. The first chapter is a summary of the relevant results from electromagnetic theory pertaining to the interaction of fields and waves with material media. Only the results are quoted and the reader is referred to specialized texts such as Landau & Lifshitz "Electrodynamics of Continuous Media".

In the second part of this book, by far the largest, the author surveys and summarizes almost 50 years of experimental research - until 1967 - on the electromagnetic phenomena and Life. These experiments cover the interactions of static and dynamic fields with biological macro-molecules, unicellular organisms, plants, animals, humans as well as the intrinsic electromagnetic phenomena to the living systems (such as skin surface electric fields).

After reading this section, I was left with no doubt as to the reality of the influence of external electromagnetic fields and waves on biological systems.

The third part of this book is a discussion of potentially productive areas for further research in the light of the common results of these experiments. Here the author suggests a number of broad areas of research together with a bit of speculation about what could be explained by the results of those future researches. In effect, he is recommending a research program in this part of the book.

The book may be read profitably by anyone with the following background:

1- Advanced High-School Level Biology
2- Electromagnetic Theory at the level of a 3rd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering
3- Modern Physics at the level of a 2nd year student of Physics or Electrical Engineering

One feature of this book is 47 pages of references to original scientific literature - many of them unfortunately in Russian.

I agree with the first reviewer and I think this book is worth reading from cover to cover.

Highly recommended as great scientific monograph.

This book deals with Horary Astrology in general and Naadi Prashna Hora in particular. Vishwaartha swabhaartyaastadapyatha vilikhyathe

Eighth chapter, 54th dictum
“To create confidence in the Jyotisha Sastra and to Predict amazing events and to make believe the words of astrologer, the astrologer should predict the results through Kala Hora”.

In the nest dictum (Sloka), Prashna Marga gives the results of planetary significations for each Hora lord. This evidently proves that Hora system of prediction, gives amazing results that is based on only planetary significations. A confused and muddled book.

I have a lot of books on Prasna mostly classics like satpanchasika, prasna jnana, etc, but also a few moderns. However this text was a real pain to read and I kept waiting till when he is going to get to astrology. For pages and pages he explains his, what can only be described, very weird ideas about cosmic consciousness and psychology. Now I am very willing to accept the Vedic version but he tries, unsuccessfully to mix in modern ideas of the brain etc with cosmic rays and you get the idea, it sounds kooky and neither vedic or scientific. When I finally got the actual prasna part I was disappointed, he doesn't really seem to be a master of the subject and I have seen real masters of this science at work. He seems to be more of a hobbyist. Anyway to cut to the chase this is a confused, muddled book. I am going to try and give it another try in the next few days but am not looking forward to it. There are much better books on prasna out there. There are two translations of Prasna Marga, one by BV Raman and the other by JN Bhasin; then there is Prasnapadavi by RK Bhatt. I already mention two others.

The Finest English Lyrical Poetry - Highly Recommended

English lyrical poetry is among the world's finest poetry. Many years ago Francis Turner Palgrave, a professor of poetry at Oxford, compiled a highly respected anthology of English lyrical poetry.
I clearly recall my excitement in my first reading of Palgrave's collection. I have since become familiar with several other good anthologies, but Palgrave's remains my favorite.
Palgrave's remarkable anthology of English lyrical poetry is found with various titles: "The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language", or "Palgrave's Golden Treasury from Shakespeare to the Present", or "Palgrave's Golden Treasury", or simply "The Golden Treasury". Sometimes one title is found on the book cover and another on the title page.
Palgrave's "The Golden Treasury" has remained continuously in print since 1861, with Oxford University Press editions in 1907, 1909, 1929, 1940, 1964 (Section V added), and 1994 (Section V1 added). New printings occur every few years.
Today this remarkable anthology is now nearly 700 pages. The font size is large and easy to read.
Palgrave's somewhat sparse footnotes are only available for Sections I-IV. Many readers may need a good dictionary for occasional archaic words and unfamiliar references to Greek and Roman mythology. I have found it quite helpful and entertaining to have a copy of Bulfinch's The Age of Fable nearby. Whichever edition and printing that you acquire, I hope you enjoy Palgrave's selections as much as I did. Cheers.

An Excellent Compilation

I bought a copy of this book on behalf of my uncle Ivor, who wanted it on behalf of a friend living abroad, and had difficulty obtaining a copy of this out-of-print book. Before my uncle sent the book on, he opened it up and browsed through it, and was so delighted with it, that he wanted a copy for himself!

Amazon keeps asking me to review it, and so I passed the request on to my uncle, who now has his own copy. Here's his description.

"Palgrave's selection of Lyrical Poetry and Songs, Books 1-4, taken from the 16th Century to the Romantic poetry of Wordsworth, Keats, Byron and Shelley, represents a range of human emotions, religious experience, and insight of the natural world and death. The poems are mainly by British poets, who express their thoughts and emotions in memorable, musical language--
'My heart leaps up when I behold | a rainbow in the sky ...'; 'The child is Father of the man ...'

"Oscar Williams has supplemented in Books 5-7 some of the poets not included by Palgrave, such as John Donne an other metaphysical poets, and taken his selections into the 2oth century. He has included T. S. Eliot, Yeates, Auden, Wilfred Owen, Frost, and Dylan Thomas, among others.

"This is a good collection of a broad range of poetry of four centuries."

Good stuff

There's lots of good stuff in this book. It's very sturdy and has a poem for every mood.

But sometimes, it felt like it was missing some of the classic poems I was looking for, but I'm not a hardcore English or poetry studier. Maybe it was okay that it was like that.

I positively loved the original sections that Palgrave chose, which are in the beginning, rather than the more modern poems.

I liked it. I recommend it as a good starting poetry anthology. =)
