Starred Review. Grade 1-4–Is there room for one more "Cinderella" variant in your collection? The answer is yes if it's this charming version set in the 1920s. Ella Cinders, her father, and Buttons the doorman/delivery boy run a dress shop until the terrible day when Mr. Cinders remarries and his nasty new wife moves in with her equally nasty daughters, Ruby and Pearl. "His new wife seemed to pop up from nowhere like a sharp-eyed, expensively dressed jack-in-the box." Ella's life is misery from then on, mitigated only by the care and attention of the faithful Buttons. Her Fairy Godmother sends her off to the ball where the Duke of Arc is smitten with her, but in the end Ella chooses a different happily ever after, with Buttons. Hughes's gouache-and-pen-line illustrations exhibit her usual meticulous attention to detail, with the ball scenes inspired by Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies, and the original dress designs by important French couturiers of the period. This insightful retelling also offers a fascinating visual peek at a glamorous time.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From Booklist
K-Gr. 3. It's the 1920s, and Ella Cinders works with her father in his dress shop, along with their young doorman, Buttons. After Mr. Cinders remarries, his new wife puts him under her thumb. Ella is soon exhausted from working at her sewing machine, while her stepsisters are modeling the gowns Ella has designed. The story follows a traditional course until the very end. When the suave socialite duke puts the slipper on Ella's foot, she dismisses him and turns to Buttons, who has been her solace through her ordeal. Together they will go off and start a shop of their own, a more preferable life than being "dressed like an expensive doll." A stylish enough work, this is a bit of an indulgence for Hughes, and the high-fashion setting and the flapper costumes don't add much to the tale for a young audience. The new ending will get their attention, however, and this self-empowered Cinderella makes for an interesting change of pace. Ilene Cooper

A Book Right Out of the Golden Age of Movies-Sensational!
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Knowing that this Cinderella-themed book won the "Kate Greenaway Medal for Children's Illustration," I decided to look at the illustration before reading the text. I was looking for authenticity and creativity in the pictures, as well as a hint of the story to come. I'm also a fan of jazz, and although the music isn't synonymous with the "age," I was curious to see whether author/illustrator Shirley Hughes incorporated any musical elements.

It didn't take long to discover the sweep and style of the 1920's, for Hughes' 2-page opening title shows a glossy ballroom floor, inhabited by a small jazz band, self-assured men in tuxedoes and tails, fashionable women in full length gowns (plunging either in front or back), and a white-coated "manservant" offering martinis. (Zelda, we have arrived!) As the story begins, pictures show the middle and under classes, and the scornful looks of the social "betters." The latter are dressed in chiffon, feathers, fancy hats, and jewelry, and a man sports a pinstripe suit with a rose boutonnire and impeccable black and white spats. You can sense the texture of their clothes, just as you can feel the conflicting attitudes of the haves and have-nots. I cheated and looked at the endpaper: The rich colors come from gouache, accented and shaded with pen. In addition (and, as noted by another reviewer), Hughes' original dress designs were inspired by 1920's French couture; her ballroom scenes by the dcor and set designs of the glorious RKO-produced Astaire/Rogers musicals. The book's remaining pictures convey emotion (especially in cinematic-like close-ups), dramatic lighting, subtle and grand action, and swirls of gorgeous, opulent color. Hughes captures the look of money and the face of disenfranchisement with equal magnificence.

OK, so I'm completely sold on the pictures. What about the story? As you may have gathered, the Cinderella here is "Ella Cinder," a comely woman who's an expert helper in her father's dress shop. When she can, she laughs with almost- boyfriend "Buttons." As for the scornful women mentioned above, they're her dad's new wife (Cinder's stepmother) and her daughters (the stepsisters!). The stepmother takes over running the shop, the stepsisters model, lounge about, and call Cinder names, and Cinder herself has to work harder than ever. Mr. Cinders is a broken man in this power play, and he can do nothing to help his daughter.

Buttons, however, scrappy American that he is, "stays on the job for [Cinder's] sake." "Privately he called the [stepsisters] a couple of puffed-up, made-up, stuck-up, brainless parakeets." He also plays his guitar" in Ella's ratty basement room, and sometimes, "they even danced together...moving softly in and out among the bales of cotton." This is pure literary magic, Hughes' words and pictures mesh like a slow dance; they're consistently evocative and note-perfect.

I'll now cut to the chase of this modernized (to a point) fairy tale: An elite ball is planned, and the stepsisters scoff at the neglected Cinder. Very soon, however, an efficient yellow-hatted woman with a purple umbrella (her wand, it turns out) does her magic, and Ella turns into the Queen of the Jazz Age, the Belle of the Ball, and the Delight of the Duke who dances with her. Hughes wisely keeps the stroke of twelve and missing slipper motifs, but like any good 1920's film, Ella turns down the rich duke for her true love, Buttons, who can promise only his winning and constant love, a dream of owning their own shop, and his famous bacon and eggs. This book from 2003 is a complete delight, excelling in every conceivable way, and it's hard to imagine any child (or adult) not enjoying and treasuring it immensely.

Note: The book is so cinematic in illustration, plot, and dialogue, that I'm already having fun casting a hypothetical "movie": Perhaps director Frank Capra (or George Cukor) would insist on a dulled-down Carole Lombard as "Cinder"; Stewart , Cagney, or a relatively new, "nice guy" actor as "Buttons," and S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall or Lionel Barrymore as the beleaguered father. Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell would reprise their cat-fighting roles from "The Women," with Katherine Hepburn (cast against type) or Bette Davis as the (wicked) stepmother, and Franchot Tone or Leslie Howard as romantically tragic Duke. Indulge yourself as I did, and buy this book for a child, and, especially, for yourself.

Entertaining & Clever Re-write of Cinderella
By Kotori
There are a lot of things to like about this book.
It is set in the 1920's and Ella is a garment maker, in her fathers elegant little dress shop. When her father remarries she gets a horrible new step-mom and two step sisters, suitably nasty.
"His new wife seemed
to pop up from nowhere like
a sharp-eyed, expensively
dressed jack-in-the-box"
Ella has a dear friend named Buttons, who makes life easier for her by keeping her company as she stays up late sewing, making her laugh and singing her songs.

The funny thing about Buttons to me is he looks like he MUST be an Aussie, and uses words like "brainless parakeets" which seems to prove the authors intention. He looks like a young mel gibson, fresh from the set of Gallipoli, and it's quite amusing. One of the wonderful things the author has done is make this book so quirky.

Ella doesn't have a perfect sylph-like figure merely hidden by soot, instead she's redheaded, with corky curls and a plump little body, which when tucked into a more suitable gown, looks just fine.

It's her personality which wins the Duke over and brings him around begging for her hand. And dear Ella takes a good look around her and realises that it's Buttons she really want's, and they take off, and set up their own dress shop.

The illustrations are fantastic, and as written in the back of the book, the ball scenes were inspired by the dance sequences in the R.K.O. Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies.
The dresses are Shirley Hughes original designs, inspired by the French couturiers of the 1920's, Doucet, Poiret and Patou.

Just love it.
Ages 8+ would most appreciate this book, although certainly any age will happily sit through it.

For you it makes an entertaing bedtime story.
For them, the same, and a little twist to the regular fairytale.

"You Never Did Try My Bacon and Eggs, did you?"
By R. M. Fisher
There are several authors and illustrators of children's picture books that should be essential reading experiences for every child, created by artists that meld whimsy, humour, poignancy, wisdom and humanity with such grace that you just know that the memory of that book will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Shirley Hughes is one of these authors/illustrators, best known for her `Alfie and Annie Rose' books, but also of several other stories that capture all the above traits. "Ella's Big Chance" is one such book, taking the traditional tale of Cinderella and changing it in several vivid, exciting ways. It is old and refreshingly new at the same time.

Mr Cinders and his daughter Ella run a dress shop, along with their delivery boy Buttons (who almost always appears as the narrator in any production of a pantomime Cinderella). They are a happy family, but all that changes when Mr Cinders marries Madame Renee, who has two daughters of her own: Ruby and Pearl. Ella's new stepfamily takes over her existence, reducing her to a servant in her own home. Her only ally is Buttons with whom she has a warm and kind friendship.

Then the news arrives that the handsome Duke of Arc is having a ball. You all know what happens next: Ella is denied an invitation, a fairy godmother transforms her rags, and Ella makes her magnificent debut. The clock strikes twelve, Ella flees and the Duke begins his search for her, using the glass slipper she left behind as his guide.

One might at this stage think that this is simply another rehash of the Cinderella tale; if you've read one, you've read them all. But Shirley Hughes' version differs in several key ways. First is the setting; Parisian France in the 1920's, where the streets are quaint and sunlit, a silver limousine takes the place of the pumpkin carriage, the dancing mirrors that of Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire, and the costumes are the quintessential gowns of Doucet, Poiret and Patou. It is a visual feast for the eyes, romantic and glamorous.

Second is Ella's physique. Whereas her stepsisters are slender and lovely (not *ugly* stepsisters at all), Ella herself is a little on the voluptuous side - and she looks fantastic. It's a great step up from the stick-figures that frequent children's fairytales, especially those targeted toward girls.

Lastly are several story elements; such as the fact that Ella's father does not pass away but remains a hen-pecked husband who is powerless to rescue his daughter. Then there is Hughes' delightful interpretation of the fairy godmother, as an umbrella-wielding granny with a secret plan for Ella. Most important of all is the twist regarding Buttons - I won't give it away (though you've probably already guessed what it is now that I've mentioned it). I'll say no more except that it's great.

So that's Shirley Hughes's Cinderella retelling, a fantastic reading experience that everyone (especially your daughters) will love, with several subtle but truthful messages on *real* beauty, *real* kindness and *real* happiness.

Good price for beginners
By SmW
The swatches are already organized for you! This is a great introductory book for the price. I am just a hobby self-taught sewer, so I found this to be really useful for ordering fabrics online. They are organized by material--animal, plant, or created. The silks are amazing. They also included different weaves of similar threads so that you can feel the texture and thickness. The pages are on a 3-ring binder, so they turn easily and fit for how thick they are.

By T. Fleming
Fascinating book! Between this, numerous trips to a local sewing chain store, and reading The Fashion Designers Textile Directory, I finally feel like I have some idea of what a pattern envelope is referring to when it says "twill suiting or gaberdine" and the like.

The best part of this book was getting to experience the swatches rather than just reading descriptions. The look and feel of fabrics is hard to describe, so it is great that there were actually swatches to go with the words.

A real slog, perhaps worth it
By Cournot
Reading all four volumes of The City of London was a real slog. There is much interesting detail, but the set has two major faults: (1) the author does far too much quoting from original sources, much of which is of dubious relevance; and(2) the author offers far too little analysis of the importance of what he is observing. So, I only recommend this to someone who wants to read lots of gossip about long past financiers or to someone with incurable insomnia. Far better to read, say Ferguson's biography of the Rothschilds.

Great book
By Granola
I originally borrowed this book from a friend. As I was going through the class I kept saying to myself, I should have bought the book. Guess I really wanted it because on the last day of class I spilled garlic butter all over her book so I had to buy her a new one.

Action packed thriller
By The Belgian Reviewer
Synopsis (spoiler-free):
The year is 1977 and David returns to Mallorca after roaming the oceans as a chef on the five-mast schooner the Evolution. He has missed the smell of Majorcan pines and is now back with the mission to become the first sushi chef on the island. When he pitches his idea for raw fish in the Boutique Hotel on the island, his eyes meet Aurora who is staying as a guest in the hotel. When he looks into her green eyes, the ground moves for him. Call it coincidence or fate but the next day she sees him in the centre of Palma and she is determined to eat his sushi. They end up parachute jumping together and when it’s her turn Aurora blacks out and by a turn of luck her foot becomes caught up in his rope when he releases his chute. After experiencing near death like this, their sense of belonging together is even more intense and the next couple of days are spent in complete happiness together. When her holiday is coming to an end she promises David to return in three months’ time. He counts down the days and finally the plane touches down, he will be able to see her again and they can start their future together. He has it all mapped out, with a romantic get-together the first few days in a remote cabin in the woods. But as soon as she sets foot on the ground the tables turn and it certainly did not turn out how he imagined. He could never have thought that there would be a murder that day and he would be running for his life from a couple of killers, aided by a corrupt policeman. The police is looking for two fugitives and they are chased in hot pursuit, being shot at by different parties and with absolutely no clue why all this is happening. It is, however, clear that they want to kill them while also framing him for the murder. The almost impossible task rests on his shoulders to get them both to safety and reveal the story that brought this all come crashing down.

My opinion:
The author doesn’t beat around the bush, already in the very first chapter we are introduced to the delightful premise that David would remember the spring of ‘77 as the best of his life, and that it would turn into a murderous, bloody, soul-destroying summer. It certainly triggered my interest and the story kept my interest all the way through. It starts off with some sweet romance but the main part of the novel is quite action-packed really, bullets are flying, they are labelled fugitives and they are running for their lives through the forest, in hot pursuit not only from the hitmen but also from the police. There are quite a lot of characters introduced to us in this novel and Mr. Stanke shows real skill in portraying them all in such detail, every one of them had a solid background story to go with. I was a little confused sometimes because it was not always very clear from the very start of a new chapter from whose perspective I was reading, they were fast changing, but it didn’t really stop the flow from the book either so I don’t hold it against him. It’s well-written, enjoyable to read with a good plot and an ending that would be rather spectacular were it be made into a movie. I also really felt myself in the year 1977 and could just about hear Elvis singing so well done.
I received a free copy from GenuineJenn in exchange for my honest review.

A Treat for Thriller Lovers
By Clare
You know that feeling when you read a book and you just want to force everyone else to read it too? That's how I would describe this novel. I've gifted this to a couple of people who've also loved it. The setting is great - you feel like you've gone back in time to the seventies and you're really there on the island. I had no idea what was going to happen next at any point, and yet the plot never felt contrived. There were a lot of characters, but I got to spend time with and get to know each of them (and fell in love with a few). You definitely need to give this book a whirl if you're a thriller fan.

It was a different time, a different world, growing up in the small town of Coolidge, Arizona in the 1940s and 50s when kids were allowed to play outside after dark, movies cost ten cents, girls played hopscotch while boys preferred marbles--but that world was going to change . . . and not always for the better.

About the Author
J. Marc. Merrill was born in 1941 in Thatcher, Arizona, but he grew up in Coolidge, where he lived from 1946 to the mid-1960s. After graduating from Coolidge High School in 1959 he attended Arizona State University where he earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in English. He taught at ASU for four years and was then hired to teach both writing and literature at Kauai Community College in Hawaii. Unfortunately housing was a critical problem on Kauai so in 1971 he, his wife and adopted son returned to Arizona where he went into sales. However, the author did return to teaching in 1990, being hired first by Mesa Community College and then Central Arizona College, with classes held at the state prison in Florence. He retired in 1999 to do research and to write full time. LITTLE IDIOT: THE LIFE OF A LITTLE GUY FROM COOLIDGE, ARIZONA is his eleventh published book. Previous titles can be seen on the J. Marc. Not Particularly Interesting
By William Dowdle
Being from Coolidge, I enjoyed the small part of the book concerning Coolidge. However, the remainder of the book is a journal of a rather boring life and way too much detail about his family and his Mormon faith. Unless a person was from Coolidge or a relative of the author, I can't see why anyone would find this book interesting.

A great reinaction of life in a small town!
By Susan Neevel
What a wonderfully, descriptive look into one mans life in a small town! The major point being...I lived there too! Coolidge , AZ is located between Phoenix and Tucson AZ, two large cities in Arizona , but life in the cotton farming community might as well be on Mars! Jim Merrill's humorous description of his life there during the 50's and 60's was a delight to read as well as a learning experience! Some things I did not know about Coolidge prior to reading this fascinating book. Jim Merrill's style of writing has the great ability to transport the reader into every situation he is writing about. I actually felt as though I was right there beside him as his life unfolded on each page! I enjoy reading when it can capture my thoughts and imagination strong enough to where I seem to experience the written proceedings! I look forward to reading the second book!

4 "Harry Potter Who?" Stars
By Blendysreadit
I think that if "Harry Potter" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" were to get it on and nine months later pop out a little by product, "Akarnae" would be it. In this debut novel by Lynette Noni, part one in a five part series, "Akarnae" weaves a tale of magic, intrigue, fantasy, hidden secrets and fun that enraptures and delights, hooking you from page one and leaving you screaming for more at the end.

Alexandra "Alex" Jennings is not your average sixteen year old teenager. With archeologists as parents, Alex has bounced from place to place with them, never staying in one place long enough to really make friends or create a social life for herself. All that changes though, when her parents are offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity and are forced to leave her behind for the next eight months, leaving her all alone for the first time while also starting a new boarding school. Starting a new school is nothing new to Alex, but when on her first day things go terribly awry and she finds herself in a new world, nothing could prepare Alex for the surprises in store for her.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me captivated until the end. A lot of fantasy young adult novels are very hit or miss for me. I have come across so many that read incredibly too juvenile for my taste and cannot hold my attention, while others can be too mature in content and lack the juvenile innocence one looks for while reading it. Neither of those were a problem in this book and Ms. Noni does a fantastic job of creating loveable characters that you find yourself wanting to go on this journey with. I cannot wait to see how Alex and her "gang" mature through this series at the same time waiting to see what mischief they get into next.

Overall, I say that you definitely need to put this book on your to-read shelf. It is so fun and entertaining without being too predictable or immature. Though listed as a YA novel, I think this book is age appropriate for anyone, there is not any content that I found too violent or "R" rated, but there is just enough chemistry and content to keep it entertaining. My only complaint that I have about this book is that it's over and I don't have my hands on Raelia (The Medoran Chronicles #2)!! I want.

I would like to thank NetGalley and Smith Publicity for the ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

Awesome!
By Jessie
The evening I finished Akarnae I sat down in front of the fire to write, unordered thoughts swirling in my head.

Do I go with the, “It’s like Harry Potter mixed with X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia” quote? Can I describe the pure awesomeness of Alex without giving things away? Characters, focus on characters. No friendships? The ways it’s better than typical young adult fantasy? The fun alternate world? The fantasticness that it is the first of a series…

Stymied by my enthusiasm, I decided to start at the beginning – the title.

People are going to need to know how to pronounce the title so they can find it and then tell all their friends about it.

I pulled the book out and started skimming through the first chapter knowing the phonetic spelling was hiding in it somewhere. Soon the skimming turned to reading, the pronunciation forgotten, and before I knew it I’d read the first quarter of the book again.

Would I recommend it?

Just in case that wasn’t clear, let me tell you again. The evening I finished the book I sat down and accidentally re-read the first quarter of the book- after reading the entire thing in less than two days.

I really liked this book and, because I know you’re still wondering, it’s pronounced Ah-kar-nay.

Now you can go find it, tell your friends about it and then, this is the really important part, after you read it tell me so we can sit down and talk about all the things that make it awesome!

What a fascinating story!

Stepping into different worlds - check
Discovering gifts - check
Awesome friends - check
Wonderfully stable MC - check
Intriguing plot - check, check, check

At first, my mind decided to do a Harry Potter comparison, but I was pleased when it turned out to be something more. It is a mix of everything I enjoy, and I really had a wonderful time reading it.

Alex, Jordan, and Bear's friendship and adventures were great. I didn't want to stop reading, nor did I want the book to end. Lynette Noni built a fantastic world and combined it with a kick-ass plot. She also gave every character a distinct "voice", which is something I really liked.

I recommend reading this book.. A definite must read.

Now, can we please get book #2? :D
